Realism. What is it? When was it? (8 sentences)

Realism is part of a nineteenth century and early twentieth century movement. This means that it took place between the early 1800's and late 1900's. Realism is a movement that began in France then spread out to the rest of the world. It can be described as the quality or fact of representing a person, thing, or situation accurately or in a way that is true to life. Realism is something opposite to romanticism and idealism. Realism attempts to illustrate life without romantic subjectivity and idealization. It focuses on the actualities of life, and truthfully treats the commonplace characters of everyday life.

What did Realism emerge from? (8 sentences)

Realism emerged as a movement that developed in the middle of the 19th century in France and then spread like wildfire throughout the rest of Europe, all the way to Russia, and then overseas to the US. This movement was a reaction against romanticism. As romanticism was often show believing in nature over culture, the solitary individual against society. Realist writers, unlike the Romantics, like to focus on groups of people. This is because Realist authors want us to believe that what we're reading is actually happening somewhere out there in the world. Many writers felt that the romantics with their focus on the spiritual, the abstract, and the ideal were being dishonest about life as it really was. And many felt romantics were irresponsible, didn’t change anything only idealized things. Thus, realists felt that they had an ethical responsibility to be honest.

In a previous novel Huck had come into money and is now none too thrilled with his new life of cleanliness, manners, church, and school. Later, Huck’s brutish, drunken father, Pap, reappears in town and demands Huck’s money, but Judge Thatcher, and the Widow Douglas try to get legal custody of Huck. Widow Douglas warns Pap to stay away from her house, in turn this leads to Pap kidnapping Huck and locking him in a cabin. In order to escape Huck fakes his own death and his body is thrown into the river. Huck hides on a small island in the river and meets Jim, a runaway slave. After a flood strikes Mississippi the two form an unlikely duo and go on an adventure to lead Jim to freedom. After many adventures including encountering a gang of robbers, a family of aristocrats, armed bandits, Peter Wilks's 3 nieces, Jim eventually gets tricked and sold to a small farming family. In the end the family was Huck's friend Sam's family and they come up with an elaborate plan to set Jim free, but Jim was already a free slave in his previous owner's will.

Huckleberry Finn has many themes, including Racism and Slavery, Intellectual and Moral Education,The Hypocrisy of “Civilized” Society,Guilt/shame, Empathy, Adventure, and Money/Wealth.
Huckleberry Finn's theme of racism and slavery deals with life for a possible runaway slave in the times of the American Revolution. Intellectual and moral education come into play because Huck is a poor uneducated boy who looks at society and comes to his own conclusion. The hypocrisy of "civilized" society in is shown in how the Judge believes it is Pap's right to have Huck despite abusing him. Guilt and shame can be seen in both Huck and society. Empathy is shown to Jim from Huck understanding how hard it is to have no one and be alone. Adventure is present in Huck and Jim's journey to set Jim free. and Lastly the presents of money and wealth is key in the reasons as to why Pap wanted Huck and how having so much money could have made Huck's life worse in that moment.

Huckleberry Finn literary devices: Narrator point of view, tone, author's purpose, dialect, and symbolism

Huckleberry Finn is written in first person point of view, through the main character Huck's eyes. The tone of the story is somewhat strange and despite Huck’s narration being breezy and generally optimistic, the events he describes and witnesses are often violent, depressing, and indicative of the worst of human nature. The author's purpose was as a confrontation of slavery and racism and revaluation of one's self. The dialect was in old timey english of the 1700's America. Some symbolism included the Mississippi river as a symbol of freedom.
