I chose these books because while reading The Very Impatient Caterpillar, I found it very engaging and a creative way to slip in facts about metamorphosis and then was able to further that information and solidify it while reading Caterpillar to Butterfly National Geographic. This topic of metamorphosis can also be found in the second grade curriculum.

Affordances: The story has a very creative plot which gravitates the reader towards it. The main character is funny and relatable to younger students, which helps with engagement. The story also does a nice job of teaching the main metamorphosis phases while making them understandable.

Limitations: Sometimes the story focuses more on the main character being bored, rather than the actual phases of the cycle and can get confusing to find the purpose/lesson of the story.

Affordances: The story uses lots of illustrations to help students comprehend what metamorphosis looks like in real life. It also has captions and side bars with extra information to keep the reader engaged, which is helpful as the book is filled with lots of information.

Limitations: The book is almost too easy for the students to read as it focuses on more younger level ideas like colors and shapes. Students could do more research on their own or in groups to learn more about why metamorphosis happens to counter this.

Affordances: The website provides a place for students to practice labeling the life cycle with interactive images. The site itself is colorful and engaging, but not too distracting.

Limitations: There are not many other options on the website besides labeling the cycle with words and pictures. It would be helpful if there were more pictures of extra facts along the side of the webpage.
