During the war, women took over many jobs traditionally done by men before the war. It made me think about the fact that when men went to war they left their old life behind and left women with the responsibility of filling their roles. Women had to learn how to do these jobs outside of the home. I chose this image because it showed a clear picture of women's roles in society. I liked how it showed a different role of women during wartime. They are all praying outside of the Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking, Surrey (located in the UK), during the Muslim festival of Baqrid or Eid al-Adha. This image leaves room for many questions but also depicts a narrative that has not held relevance: the Muslim experience. The Muslim's contribution and dedication to fighting a war that was not their making are admirable. When the war broke out, the common belief was that the battles would be quick, and "the boys would be home by Christmas." Anna Coleman Ladd (pictured next to a soldier) made masks for soldiers with facial wounds. These masks led to advances in cosmetic surgery. I chose this image because it shows the extent of injuries the war caused and also the innovations used to hide physical scars. Soldiers lived in squalor-- with lice, mud, and chunks of dead mens' bodies scattered around them. The British trenches were temporary and amateur compared to the German ones. Choosing not to waste time building lavish trenches, the British hoped instead to move their offensive lines forward. Take the Battle of Somme-- the Germans retreated into their fancy bunkers while the British fired at them.
