Demonstrates Independence

In the beginning, during socratic seminars, I was able to think of concepts and ideas that relate to the topic, but wasn’t able to articulate it to the rest of the classes even though I had brought notes with me. I only thought of evidences and commentaries in my head and the class was going at a pace that I couldn’t fully develop my thoughts quite yet. I was able to grow over the semester in this trait as I began to independently building off of others’ ideas and adding my own on a topic given. I asked questions to get a deeper understanding of the topic. This demonstrates independence because I built off on top of others' ideas and able to add more depth of my own. I used a variety of academic phrases and brought notes of my own in order to guide me. Currently, I give myself an A in this area because I can do things on my own in order to better myself and my grades. I can now actively participate in a discussion on academic topics. My goal for next semester is to continue this growth and add even more strong concrete details and commentaries during socratic seminars.

Demonstrates Independence

When I first began taking AP World tests, I did not go to tutoring because i didn’t want to wake up earlier and thought it wouldn’t help that much which resulted in the loss of points. As I began to realize I needed to do something to improve upon my grade, without instruction, I started to go to the review sessions Thursday to prepare for the test Friday so I can assure I do well and learn from my mistakes. Going to these sessions made a significant impact on my frade. I was finally able to take charge of my own grades and was able to get the grades I want to have. This demonstrates independence because I saw that I needed to improve upon myself and found a resource in order to help me achieve this. I seeked help and found it from my teacher, enabling me to strive for the best. At this moment, I would give myself an A for demonstrating independence because I took charge of my own grade once I realized I needed to do better on my tests and got the grade I wanted to get. I plan to keep going to these tutoring sessions in order to keep my grades up on these tests.

Build Strong Content Knowledge

On the first draft of my revolution essay, I did minimal research on the content before writing my essay which reflects right back on my grade for the writing. After seeing what I got on the first draft I knew I needed to change something. I started to do deeper and more intense research than before in order to achieve a better grade. This time I read, multiple articles about the Haitian Revolution in order to get a better understanding. This shows strong content knowledge building because I effectively established a wide range of knowledge from this revolution through my research and and study. I would give myself an A in this area since I built up my historical knowledge on the Haitian Revolution after learning that my analysis and evidence was not strong enough to backup my claim. My goal for this concept is to persistently engage in my essays through the work of quality research.

Comprehend and Critique

Socratic seminar requires lots of listening, speaking, and comprehension.In the Persepolis Socratic Seminar, at first, I was able to understand what others were trying to say, but did not critique or find a counter argument to the point they were trying to get across. I was not able to articulate my thoughts. However, in the second Socratic Seminar, the one that mainly focused on Things Fall Apart and competition, I was fully able to grasp the point that was put out and comprehended it well overall for all of this as we had to think deeper. This effectively shows my ability to comprehend and critique because I was able to evaluate the reasoning of others in order to bring the seminar into a deeper academic conversation. Currently, I give myself an A in this area because I was able to understand the arguments of others and question their claim if needed. My goal is to continue this growth all the way through my academic journey. I want to continue to critique someone's assertion when necessary, but still be able to comprehend the point they are trying to get across.

Use Technology and Digital Media Strategically and Capably

For my Revolution Essay, in the beginning I had just searched up my revolution name, which was the Haitian Revolution, allowing a whole bunch of different websites to show up. Whether these websites were reliable or not, was the thing to decide, and which of the many websites to choose from to use as my evidence. I just choose the websites on the first page to use as my evidence, but when I got my essay back, it stated that I needed to improve upon my pieces of evidence. With the chance to revise the essay, I needed to make my essay better overall and find more evidence that strengthens my claim even more. This time, when searching up my revolution, I added site: .edu or .gov next to it in order to narrow down my choices and assure that my sources are reliable and usable for my essay. This shows how I can effectively use technology in order to benefit myself. This displays my strategic use of technology and media due to the fact that I used the google tools to best suit my needs of reliable and strong websites, allowing me to enhance my concrete details. I would give myself a B in this category because I was capable of using the new tools of technology, but failed to integrate my learning from the technology into outside circumstances. My goal is to expand my use of technology and media in order to further strengthen my work and my knowledge.

Understanding Other Perspectives and Cultures

At first, during the advertisement analysis, I had just thought of my view and perspective of the UPS advertisement. I had thought it meant that their service was able to get your items to you in a good manner, meaning that your shipments wouldn’t get damaged during the trip. I thought this was the only answer to this advertisement. As I began to discuss the picture with my group, I realized there were multiple perspectives you could look from. My group thought that the advertisement represented quick and easy shipment to your house. I looked back at the picture and realized how they saw that, their view also made sense. I was able to understand and look at the advertisement from their point of view and connect it to mine. Both of our perspectives came together to make our analysis even stronger. This exhibits my use of understanding other perspectives and cultures because I communicated with others with different perspectives in order to create a powerful analysis of the advertisement with multiple views of people of different opinions and backgrounds. Currently, I give myself an A in this particular trait because I was able to accept that there are different views on a topic and was able to combine it with mine to get the full picture. My goal is to keep using my skills that I have gained for the rest of my school years, and even beyond because understanding different perspectives of people of various types is an important trait to have in life.

Response to the Varying Demands of Audience, Task, Purpose, Discipline

In the assignment How to Write About Africa, we had to annotate the excerpt. How to Write About Africa was directed to be satirical yet critique the way others are writing about Africa, which is why I need to understand and appreciate how much the tone affects the way you interpret or read something. In the beginning, I read the article disregarding the tone and did not adjust to my communication. As I reread the excerpt, I began to set the purpose of the article and was able to comprehend the text despite its various demand of audience and purpose. Currently, I would give myself a B in this area since I have learned to adjust, but I am not yet grasping the point and importance of this trait. My goal is to improve upon this area in order to make myself fully rounded in these common core traits, which will ultimately help me in the long run

Valuing Evidence

In the assignment, Southernization, I had to be able to pull out different pieces of evidence and find the claim within the article. First time reading through, I was able to find the main point that the author was trying to get through to us, but very little pieces of evidence to support it. These pieces of evidence that I found were weak and were not that strong enough to efficiently prove my claim. The second time through, I knew my main focus needed to be finding better pieces of concrete details. I successfully was able to do this the second time through. This shows my value in evidence because I continued to read the article over and over again until solid and relevant pieces of evidence was found in order to effectively support my claim. I'd give myself an A in this trait because I was successfully able to pull parts of an article out to show the accuracy of my claim. My goal for the rest of my academic school years is to countinue to develop and use this skill that I have acquired and modified in order to really help and benfit myself and my works.
