         <title>Phonemic Awareness</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and use the individual sounds, or phonemes, in spoken words (Reading Rockets, 2022b). This includes blending these sounds into words, segmenting words into sounds, and deleting and playing with the sounds in spoken words (Reading Rockets, 2022b).&nbsp; An example of this is being able to identify the individual letters sounds in the word cat, breaking apart to word cat into those sounds, and putting them back together again to read the word cat.</div>]]></description>

This involves the skills of hearing the sounds, identifying the letters, and using patterns of sounds, or phonemes, to read the written language (Percipio Global Ltd., 2021).</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression (Reading Rockets, 2022a). Students who do not read fluently may sound choppy and/or awkward when reading (Reading Rockets, 2022a). This can indicate a challenge with decoding skills or simply a need for more practice. Students who do read fluently will often read in phrases and use intonation and expression that matches what they are reading (Reading Rockets, 2022a).</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Letter of the week: PreK Classroom<br>Teaching to identify letters and the sounds they make.<br>Introducing a new letter of the alphabet each week. Teacher names the letter, makes the sound(s), writes the letter on the whiteboard, and asks students to copy saying the sound, using verbal direction when needed to indicate the formation of the mouth for that sound. Students practice identifying the letter, making the sound, and writing it every day, learning to identify the name and sound of the letter.<br>Students of all levels will gain some knowledge of letter recognition and sounds through daily repetition.</div>]]></description>
