Radio was the most powerful source of media during this time, because it was so widespread, cheaper, and faster than any other source of media during this time. Professional sports were beginning to be very popular at this time as well. The professional players were known as "superheroes" according to the mass media. People who were poor, and were good at sports would rise up to fame and riches which gave hope to average civilians that they could too improve their lives. Movies also became big pastimes where people could escape their lives and disappear into somebody else's for an hour or so.

Roaring Twenties Economy

The automobile changed american life in many ways. One major change was route 66. This helped Americans get from chicago to california. Automobiles created many jobs for people from how many different types of businesses that were created such as gas stations, motels, etc. Automobiles decreased business in the railroad companies, because more and more people were using their own automobiles to get place to place and more and more items are being shipped from trucks and cars rather than trains. Airplanes started to carry mail around the US. This affected business growth and allowed for businesses to flourish because they were now able to ship their goods all over the country and were also able to import any products needed. Airplanes affected the business of trains to slow down, because they were used a lot for importing and exporting goods around the US, which the planes could now do much faster. Installment plans were created so that consumers were able to buy things not necessarily in their price range, but would be able to pay it back with a low interest rate. The mass advertising would lead consumers to believe that the new installment plans made purchasing products much easier, and seem effortless. This also helped to almost double the amount of goods sold from businesses. Credit allowed for people to purchase electrical conveniences that they otherwise would not have been able to afford. The installment plan caused for people to believe that everything was going good in the economy, but they were actually stepping into the era of the Great Depression. Some businesses were not doing well during this time, because of the many worker strikes and farmers were facing overproduction goods which made it harder to sell their products when there was such an abundance of them.

Harding's tax policy on imports affected Britain and France and the war debt issue, by making Britain and France able to sell enough products to be able to pay back the debts they owed to the U.S. Some taxes on US imports were up to 60% which protected US businesses. The Dawes plan gave 2.5 billion to Britain and France and they would pay the money back with a certain amount each year until they fully paid off their loan. Harding's friends damaged his administration with business affairs and social reform. Harding was found guilty of bribery when he allowed two private oil companies to drill on government owned land in return for more than $400,000 in loans, bonds, and cash.
