In comparison to the life drawing I did back in A Levels, the session was more relaxed. We got to draw using our own style and materials, although the instructor suggested we draw at a larger scale by using larger sketchpads. However, I would like to do smaller studies so I will stick with A4 for the meantime.

Back in A Level life drawing we worked on easels with A2 paper whilst standing as well. I will try standing next time to see if posture effects my energy levels and quality of drawing...

As you have to claim seats, in the Billiards room, via first come first serve, I was too anxious to claim a good seat that I forgot to stand up and draw...

During this session I focused too much on the structure of the figure, which left me no time to capture the gesture. This resulted in my drawings looking rather rigid and not fluid at all. I am most interested in drawing and painting portraits/figures, hence I have created a mood board of my ideal aesthetic by printing images and taping it to my studio space. 

To make this a collaborative activity with the rest of Red Group 5, I've suggested to link our mood boards together on the wall to make it visually impactful. The wall is looking more exciting! Sarah, Maisie and I were in the studio before the artist lecture today so we began linking our images together. It was great to find connections between the mood boards, despite each being so distinct. 

This overall was a great way to collaborate with them, however it would have been even better if more of our group was here at the same time. I want to try to get more of our group engaged with this, to make the wall look fuller.

Dutch painter, influence from Caravaggio (Italian painter).

Popular to be depicted playing an instrument during early 1620s among 'Netherlandish' followers of Caravaggio.

Strong lighting + close up of the subject shows the Italian artists influence on the Dutch painter.

I personally enjoy this composition, there's more weight towards the bottom with only some negative space at the top.

Oil painting preparatory sketch depicting Aurora goddess of dawn carrying Cephalus the mortal hunter off to heaven in her chariot.

This prep painting is meant to be just a section of a larger work depicting the myth that decorated Torre de la Parada (hunting lodge of Phillip IV of Spain)

The unfinished nature of this allows for the underpainting to show. I love the looseness of the brushstrokes and the smaller 'imperfections'.

Usually when preparatory studies are done there's a more free spirited energy that is created, which ends up getting lost within the final work.

Despite Turner's dramatic and theatrical oil paintings, I am drawn to his small water colour studies he has worked on.

I enjoy this one in particular as instead of focusing on light, like he usually does, he captures depth through perspective.

The painting is rather small, despite this he can squeeze in a lot of detail using a more clumsy medium (water colour).

I found it rather difficult to understand/interpret the works of Sarah Lucas... But it was quite impressive to see her exhibition take up such a large space in Tate Britain.

Her work didn't inspire me that much, I found the JMW Turner room to be more facinating. Perhaps I am just too old fashioned.

I also stood up for this session, however I found this to have no effect on my drawing; just that my back was less sore...

The instructor also suggested for me to create rhythm through the lines being drawn. This definitely helped me create continuous movements on the page, rather than stopping to draw multiple angles, and made the figure look less stiff. We decided to move the mind map to the centre of the wall for the upcoming open studio this Thursday. This time instead of keeping our images in the same arrangement, we mixed them around with each others to help make the space feel different.
