Tanning is a chemical treatment of the hides to give them required characteristics, such as flexibility and durability. If leather were not tanned, it would dry and flake in extremely short order. Some glove companies compete for quality hides with makers of other fine leather products. The Rawlings Company depends on one tannery and buys all of the tannery's product.

Each cowhide provides the leather for three or four gloves.

The Manufacturing Process

By the time cowhides arrive at the factory, they have already been cured (salting or drying to kill bacteria) and tanned (chemically treated to prevent putrefaction), all of which prepares them to be turned into gloves. Once at the factory, the cowhides are graded for such things as color and tested in a laboratory for strength.

The manufacturing process for baseball gloves is fairly simple: the various parts of the glove are cut and then sewn together with a long string of rawhide leather.

As is true of many older products where refinement is the primary goal of the manufacturers, baseball glove design is not changing as rapidly as it did in the past. Previous developments included such things as holding the fingers of the glove together with lacing, changes in the design of the pocket and the heel of the glove, and redesigning the catcher's glove so that a catcher can handle a ball with one hand, like other fielders.

Baseballs have evolved through many forms since the beginnings of the sport. The materials that comprise a baseball have consistently changed along with the development of new materials and technology. 

Early on, baseballs did not all look the same. Some of the first baseballs were crudely crafted by players, using whatever supplies were available, including old rubber from shoes wrapped in yarn and leather. These balls varied greatly in size, weight, and how far they would travel coming off the bat. 

Isinglass is semi-transparent gelatin that’s made from fish bladders. And It’s quite often used as a clarifying agent for beers, wines, and ciders.

1. Beeswax or honey

beeswax is used as a thickener or stiffening agent to keep the oils and water-based liquids used in emulsions, like lip balm

2. Carmine or cochineal 

produce just 400 grams of red dye – used in lipstick, eyeshadow, blusher and nail polish – the powdered remains of around 70,000 cochineal bugs

3.Casein

Casein, caseinate and sodium caseinate are ways of saying ‘milk protein’, usually cow’s milk. It accounts for about 80 per cent of the protein found in cow’s milk

4. Glycerine

It can be derived from animal fat and is used in moisturisers and lotions

5.Hyaluronic acid

The animal-derived versions are produced from the combs of roosters

6. Lanolin

It is from wool-bearing animals like sheep.

7. Retinol

n the food industry retinol will usually be derived from animals, however most cosmetic retinol comes from synthetic sources. Natural alternatives include pumpkin seed oil and hemp oil

8. Shellac

Like carmine, shellac comes from bugs 

9. Squalene

squalene is traditionally extracted from shark liver oil.

10. Stearic acid

This saturated long-chain fatty acid is found in animal and plant fats 

All of these items contain all animal ingredients. And red lipstick is made from animals.

Many plastics, like commercial shopping bags, contain chemicals often referred to as "slip agents," which are derived from the stearic acid in animal fat. They essentially prevent the polymers from sticking to metals during manufacturing and clinging to each other afterward. Some bike tires also contain these elements.
