Because his mother was a secretary and because she couldnt keep up with the verbal sparring they had when arguing.

3. It was a strict school (ruthlessly authoritarian), and Noah questions about the logic of the rules, Catholic school didn't allow him to be creative and independent. He found the rules illogical. Noah drank all of the grape juice and ate all of the Eucharist, as he wasnt alloed to have any. 'In my mind, I wasn't breaking any rules, because the rules didn't make any sense.'

4. He found them stupid and they didn't make sense to him. If the rules didn't make sense then he wasn't breaking any. (In his mind)

5. He found it ironic that white people spent years seeing the same things done to black people as had been done to the cat while doing nothing, yet they found the life of the cat more 'important' and outrageous.

I think that the narrator is referring to the fact that war is not this idealized honorable thing to do. He refers to the fact that war is a sad and horrible event in which society pressures and forces young men and boys to join the army and to kill (to not be seen as cowards) so as not to disappoint their families and friends. War is not moral as it is usually avoidable, it takes many lives and destroys the souls and minds of young men. Immoral killing is also common during, as sometimes the soldiers kill just for fun, not knowing anyone's story but still seeing them as an enemy.

Chapter 11 - Chapter is about Noah feeling like an outsider even in the most integrated of South African schools, because he still didn't fit in as he was still the only mixed kid. He was known as the pupil who always got detention (it was a running joke between the students) and was also the 'tuck-shop guy'. He didn't have any enemies, but he also didn't have any real friends.
Chapter 12 - He was the funny guy, and the funny guy hangs out with the cool guys and the cool guys get girls. He felt awkward around girls and had a (mutual) crush on Zaheera, but didn't try to ask her out because he assumed she would say no. He found out that she also had a crush on him after she moved away to America. (He didn't take his chance, what he could've had but didn't ask for - broke his heart)
Chapter 13 - Teddy and Trevor Noah were both the terrors of their families and got along well, they walked to and from everywhere together. They shoplifted alcohol-filled chocolates together for about a month before they got caught --> they ran away but teddy didn't follow him and got caught by the cops. Teddy got expelled and Noah was presented with the footage of himself shoplifting but nobody recognized him because he was lighter-skinned and the color gets blow out on camera so they thought that Teddy was shoplifting with some white kid.

''The Man I Killed'' and ''Ambush'' connect to the events of each other. In the chapter ''Ambush'', O'Brien writes in first person about how he killed a young soldier by throwing a hand grenade on him and his intense guilt about his actions. In ''The Man I Killed'' there is a third person narrative and this chapter focuses on the possibilities of the young soldiers life and future, and a detailed description of his death. They complement each other because we read about the psychological effects of killing someone and the intense guilt that he could feel. We read about the guilt and the fine line between morality that O'Brien had to navigate. We also read about the hallucinations or visions that killing the man had on him and they give us a better understanding of his trauma response and give us a greater sense of empathy towards him.

Observations 2. A Summary of his visit to your office 3. Diagnosis 4. Recommendation for treatment.

Norman Bowker is clearly exhibiting signs of PTSD and depression. He has an empty look in his eyes and it seems as though he is stuck in some memory of his. During his visit to my office he was subdued and unresponsive, he didn't want to talk about anything. (at least not with me). Of the little amount he did say during our session and judging by his behavior, I can say, with utmost confidence, that this Norman Bowker is suffering with PTSD and depression. (Maybe even suicidal thoughts, or at least passive suicidal ideation). I would recommend getting him someone he trusts and is willing to open u to, having weekly check-ups with him, and getting him some medications if he shows no signs of getting better.

For all my education, all my fine liberal values, I now felt a deep coldness inside me, something dark and beyond reason. It's a hard thing to admit, even to myself, but I was capable of evil. I wanted to hurt Bobby Jorgenson the way he'd hurt me. For weeks it had been a vow—I'll get him, I'll get him—it was down inside me like a rock.
Are colours associated with emotions?

Colours and their connections are usually made in our brains, different colours use different 'light signals' in our eyes, and bring up a different amount of brain activity. This is why red brings up blood pressure and blue/green bring it down. Some research suggests that the pituitary gland, which is responsible for body temperature, energy level, sleep pattern, metabolism, and sexuality, is sensitive to color stimulation (Gruson, L. 1982).

Edit: Society of course also plays a big role in our associations and emotions when we are presented with colours. We use phrases such as 'I'm feeling blue' or 'turning green from disgust' or 'to see red' to emphasize our emotions, so these colours will automatically be associated with the linked emotion. Culture also adds to our perception of colours and their associations, some cultures have different words for colours, like in english we say light blue and dark blue, other languages have completely different words and make no connection between light blue and dark blue as we do because they do not see them as shades of the same colour, but rather as two completely colours. (Like the way we see pink and red as two colours and not as dark red and light red)

The creator of this advertisement uses colors to convey the emotion of disgust in the viewer. Contrasting colors, in this case black and white, are used to emphasize the big moldy close-up image of the burger after 29 days. This invokes disgust as the contrast draws attention to the mold and appeals to all of the senses, almost letting us smell the mold on the burger. This conveys disgust as nobody want to eat moldy food.

Visuals are used in this advertisement to create a sense of disgust in the audience. A big close up picture of a moldy burger covers half of the poster, immediately drawing the viewers eye, this is done by using the focal point advertising strategy. Our gaze is directed to an enlarged image of the burger, with the words 'day 29' next to it, a reference to the McDonalds burger time-lapse video which showcased the amount of preservatives and chemicals involved in fast food chains. Overall, this enlarged image of the moldy burger is the main visual component of the poster which invokes disgust in the viewer.

EDIT: I think that this convinces the consumer to buy burger king because we are constantly told that preservatives are toxic chemical and bad for us, but their function is to keep food edible and safe, if they were no preservatives in our food then we would be eating moldy or stale food.

This video left me feeling inspired and honestly gave me goosebumps at some moments, especially when the gaze was used, which made me feel like I was being spoken to directly and personally by Colin Kaepernick. I was surprised by the extremely harsh repercussions given to any sports players who displayed their protest for racial injustice, as this seemed unfair to me. As a nation which has freedom of speech in its laws, I think everyone has a right to show their solidarity with a movement which is not hurting anyone, they were respectful and peaceful about it and didn't disrupt the performance of any athletes so its hard for me to find reasons why bringing awareness to global issues of inequality was viewed as 'bad'. I also did not expect something as simple as standing up for minorities to make people send death threats and hate toward an individual, when the thing they stood up for is an important issue and I think its honorable that they risked their career to bring attention to it. The advert used celebrities to convey its message, but in a way which showed they were like us once, and even 'plain folk' can become great. Storytelling was also a prominent part of this advert, where we got a snippet of the elite athletes lives and how they became athletes through hard work and determination, this also conveys the message that we can become great with hard work and determination. Overall, the video left me feeling inspired about my own abilities to 'do the thing', and made more knowledgeable about issues not only in sports, but worldwide.

Entry about Poem: a Bird came down the walk

I think that maybe she viewed all animals/creatures as 'human' in a sense, for example when she calls the Earthworm a 'fellow', like you would a human.

She seems really curious and sort of lets her thoughts flow on paper, like when she says 'they looked like frightened Beads, I thought'.

Now that I read the poem a second time, I don't think that the bird is 'bad', more so Dickinson is simply describing the beauty of the nature we see every day, even if its just a bird eating a worm. She also describes his flight as elegant and admires him, not wanting to scare him off. I think this is what she alludes to when she says she writes 'like one in danger, cautious' where I think she doesn't mean in real danger, just uses a simile to show that she didn't want to disturb him, finding the bird fascinating. Perhaps she meant that she saw the bird as a predator in the natural world, but wasn't scared of him herself.

I also think the bird is a symbol of nature, as he stands for the everyday aspects and simplicity (even routine or repetition) of each day in nature.

Another thing I noticed was the way the words flowed in a sentence, the use of worlds such as 'convenient', 'glanced', 'hurried', 'stirred', 'unrolled' are almost unconventional in the context which she uses them, and it makes the poem sound more unique and quirky.

Robots are unloading firearms from the boat Ultimus and the humans barricade themselves inside

Men are arguing over whose fault the uprising/revolt of the robots is:

Hallemeier: Nobody is to blame except the Robots.

Alquist: No, it is we are to blame. You, Domin, myself—all of us. For our own selfish ends, for profit, for progress, we have destroyed mankind. Now we’ll burst with all our greatness.

Dr Gall then admits to tampering with the robots (with Helena's persuasion/idea):

Dr. Gall: I changed the character of the Robots. I changed the way of making them. Just a few details about their bodies. Chiefly—chiefly, their—their irritability . . . They’ve ceased to be machines. They’re already aware of their superiority, and they hate us as they hate everything human.

They want to go and negotiate with the robots, Busman goes out with half a billion but touches their electric current fence and dies.

Robots begin their attack and the electric works fail, Hallemeier gets stabbed.

Radius (Robot leader) does not kill Alquist because he works with his hands like the Robots. Act II ends with Radius making a 'speech' to the other robots.

Radius: You will work! You will build for us! You will serve us! (Radius climbs on the balcony) Robots of the world— (Robots straighten up.) the power of man has fallen. A new world has arisen, the rule of the Robots, march.

9. The author uses an isolated setting to enhance the feeling of dissociation from the real world. It is mentioned multiple times that the factory and its management are based on an island, neither in Europe nor in America. The characters as well as their world are dissociated and disconnected from society and non-business related human interactions, this makes them isolated and (ironically) less human.

10. The author uses symbolic names for the characters to represent the real world, its persons and dynamics in the play. The names are chosen according to linguistic similarity to real words- Domin-Dominance; Farby-Fabricate -or based on historical and biblical references. Each of the characters names and traits represent real human emotions and behaviours which we display.

Some people believe that a sentence can be feminine, as Virginia Woolf argues. Some authors use these preconceptions to their advantage when writing in the POV of a male/female character. A 'feminine' sentence (or piece of writing) could be interpreted as gentle or uses more describing words, or focuses on smaller issues, whereas a 'masculine' sentence (or writing) is associated with the big issues such as power or war, there is also the belief that men write more directly than women. After this class, I realised that I also carry these beliefs based on stereotypes and that good authors use this to their advantage to influence the reader to have a specific view on a character or their writing.

We, as people, have unconscious associations, beliefs, or biases toward any social group. We see them as 'outsiders' and people don't usually accept anything 'different' into their day to day lives very easily. This makes it easy for us to create our own picture or idea of a social group and put them all into the same box, grouping them together without knowing all of the individuals because of preconceived notions which we have because of our culture or environment. By taking one positive or negative characteristic about someone, we tend to generalize it and apply it to all aspects of their life or to their social group.

How does Barbie challenge traditional gender roles throughout the film?

The role of women and men in society is switched--> Patriarchy vs. Matriarchy.

What does the film say about men or women expressing emotions?

The expectations of society for men to be emotionless and the opinion that women are too emotional and can express their emotions more freely. Also that society doesn't provide adequate support for people struggling with mental health and that any negative thoughts or emotions should be kept to ourselves, not talked about.

What are the societal constructs of masculinity and how does this play out in the film? What messages are there here for viewers of all genders?

The novelty of a male-dominant world to Ken, how he was almost aggressive towards barbie when he wanted her to like him, because showing emotions like care and love were not 'manly'. (This was after he got influenced by the real world.) Masculine energy and domination in the world.

Barbie is often seen as a symbol of femininity. How does the movie use her character to explore and question what femininity means?

She is firstly portrayed as perfect and always happy with no daily struggles, wearing only pink and looking amazing from the moment she wakes up until she goes to bed. Then she starts to question her reality and think about death, becoming more relatable to real women, facing the same struggles and coming back stronger than before when she overcame them. During her journey to becoming perfect again, she realizes that she doesn't want to go back to the Barbie world of perfection, but prefers real life struggles and to actually experience life as a human.

What did Barbie mean when she told Ken “Maybe all the things you thought made you, you, aren’t really you”?

Roles being pushed on people by society. Journey of self discovery, you do not have to be what society tells you, puts you in a box, you can be your own individual.

In the movie, Barbie says, "By giving voice to the cognitive dissonance of living under patriarchy, you rob it of its power." What do you think she means by this?

Accepting or realizing the truth can lead to better changes and to a better sense of self-understanding. When we question things, their power over us is lessened.

The movie criticizes more societal ills than just oppressive gender norms. What are some of these criticisms and how are they expressed?

Social conformity, materialism.

It allows our words to have impact on people and their opinions, communicating can change the way someone thinks about something. All change comes about when a new and innovative idea is convincingly conveyed with statistical proof or other persuasive techniques, showing us the transformative power of communication.

Landing page analysis- How do the authors use the conventions of website to persuade the reader?

The Gympaba landing page informs and persuades the reader through the use of website conventions of image and layout. The first thing that catches the reader's eye is the slider with changing photos of happy students in a teaching environment. The photos are mostly headshots, with the school address written on top of them in white, immediately informing the audience of the schools location. Emphasising the credibility of the landing page is also the school logo, which is in the top left corner, along with the IB logo, which signifies the presence of an IB programme available at the school for new students. The web page authors used colours of green, white and black in order to create a sense of professionality and modern style. Also, the colour green is the primary colour of the logo of the school, making a subconscious connection between the landing page and the school itself. Overall, these features persuade the reader to find out more about the school, or to enrol their child in Gympaba over other schools.Informative, persuade new students parents to enroll in our school, to keep the current students updated, to provide information to current students parents.

They are almost always posed, not natural, and are often as prominent as the copy.

Layout: look out for box-outs, bullet points, ears and other kinds of layout features.

Entertainment: although they might be topical and current, most magazine articles are designed to entertain. Information may be displayed in an appealing way, using pull quotes and subheadings.

Buzzwords: being up-to-date, relevant and current means some articles make use of buzzwords and words that are popular at the time of publication.

Interactive Features: increasingly, articles that would traditionally have been printed in magazines are being published online. In this case, look out for interactive features such as embedded videos, hyperlinks and tabs.

Embedded interviews: experts on or participants in the topic at hand are often interviewed and quotations are used throughout the article. In the case of celebrity articles, the whole piece could be the write-up of an interview (see below).
