This book is about a young women who doesn't fit in with the other girls in her new school. The girls in the school are jealous of the new girls extreme beauty, so they are very mean. One of the mothers tells the school girls that the new girl they're making fun of comes from a very poor family, and she words hard to help her parents as much as possible. The girls feel awful that they made fun of her and went to apologize to her, they ended up befriending her.
Age/Audience
This book would be appropriate for Middle school girls. i would recommend this to any young women because it teaches the lesson of diversity and kindness.
Possible Teaching Points:
This book shows many different family backgrounds.

Written and Illustrated By Dan Yaccarino
fiction picture book
Review:
This book is beyond adorable. One of my favorite I have read. Alfred the pug deals with constant bullying. All the animals he lives with tell him he is unlovable and the neighborhood dogs take him feel worse of the way he looks. One day new neighbors move in. he cant see them because he cant see over the fence. He can hear another dog through the fence and they become friends. Alfred lies to the new dog Rex and tells him he is a golden retriever. They have so much in common so rex digs under the fence to meet Alfred. They're both pugs and Alfred made and friend and never felt unlovable again.
Age/Audience
I would recommend this to 3rd or 4th graders who love animals. I would read this to any grade.
Possible teaching points
anyone can be loved. bullying is not okay.

9/10/16
written and illustrated by Tedd Arnold
Genre:
fiction picture book
Review:
This book is a work of art. The author is also the illustrator. He book so much effort into this book. he drew the pictures with such detail and even hand drew the words. The content of the text is amazing as well. This is one of the first books I have ever found that touches on child anxiety. It is about a young boy who learned about the human body, he is beyond scared that his body parts will begin to fall off if he is not careful. He is scared because of the metaphors his family says. "can you give me a hand?" or "cat got your tongue?" he takes these statements literally. Very cute book.
Age/Audience
This book would be perfect for a 4th or 5th grade classroom. I would recommend this book to a student who is interested in science or shows signs of anxiety.
Possible Teaching Points:
My would read this book to my classroom while we are learning different part of the body. it would be easy to read through the book and stop at different parts of the book and have talking points about parts of the body. This would also be a good book when learning about metaphors.

By Keith Faulkner
10/23/16
Illustrated by Jonathan Lambert
Genre:
Non-fiction picture book.
Review:
Adorable pop up picture book that teaches a great lesson. This book tells the story of a pig with a long nose. He is very proud of his nose and brags about it to other animals. He is so proud that he sticks his nose way up in the air and doesn't watch where he is going and runs into a tree. He then is left with a normal pig nose. This is an extremely funny book.
Age/Audience
This book would be appropriate for a kindergarten or first grade level. I would recommend this book to an early reader who enjoys animal books. Also any other student who enjoys pop up books.
Possible Teaching Point:
I could use this book to teach about bragging and being too prideful and how it is bad I would most likely teach this to a kindergarten or first grade class.

9/10/16
Written by: Debbie Allen
Illustrated by: Kadir Nelson
Genre:
Non fiction picture book
Review:
This was one of my favorite books growing up. It is truly beautiful story of a young African American girl who wants to be a dancer. The book touches on cultural issues. IN the book it states how hard it is to be an African American Ballet dancer. The main character of the book is not only African American but she is much taller than any of the other dancers. The odds are against her in making it as professional dancer. With hard word and dedication she becomes a professional.
Age/Audience:
The reading level for this book would be for a 4th or 5th grader. This book would be interesting for young girls who like ballet or any young girl to believe in themselves. i might share this with student who feel themselves as "different".
Possible Teaching Points:
I would use this to teach about Jobs. Usually young students say the basic jobs they would want to have as career when they grow up. some include: president, doctor, ballerina. This book shows the truths of dedication. So if you want to be (Job) when you grow up you need to show dedication.

I had it memorized as a young girl. This is a rhyming book that speaks about talking to strangers. It uses the classic story of the spider and the fly to teach a lesson about talking to strangers. It is a relatively dark book but it teaches a lesson without being too scary. It touches on the dangers of people even with how charming they may be.
Age/Audience:
the reading level for this book would be good for a 3rd and 4th grader. I would read it to younger students because of the teaching point, but it would be above their reading level. I would recommend this book to any student. Any student could benefit from the story.
Possible Teaching Point:
I doubt there is an AKS for the content in this book. It may not have an Educational lesson in it. It does indeed Have a teaching point. I would recommend this to parents to read to the students in my class.

Written by : Raina Telgemeier
Genre: Graphic Novel.
Review:
This is a spin off of the book "Smile". In the book "Smile" the author speaks of her annoying little sister Amara. In the book "Sisters". They speak of the summer before Raina goes to high school. The two have never gotten along. They are complete opposites. They go on a cross country road trip with their family. The whole trip they argue over everything like what they would do with a snake on the loose. Their mini van breaks down and the girls are stuck waiting together for hours. At the end of the novel a snake ends up in the car and they have to take it on together. They learn that team work is important and that they should learn to get along.
Age/Audience.
I would say this book is targeted towards middle school students. Its easy to read because of the pictures and has many topics that young adults can relate to .
Possible teaching points:
This book teaches the power of team work. Team work and getting along with your "team" members (your family). Siblings usually get to a point where they stop hating each other and become friends.

Written by : Pat Miller
Genre: Non fiction picture book
review:
This book deals with the story of Hanson Gregory, who invented the doughnut after being out at sea for long periods of time when he was young. The doughnut was invented through Hanson taking a top of a pepper shaker and cutting out the raw center of a breakfast pastry that the sailors called sinkers and then frying the dough. There were extravagant stories made about this, though, including one about how, as he was wrestling the wheel against the sea, a sinker got spiked by the wheel and the doughnut was born that way.
Age/Audience
This book seemed like the perfect book for higher level readers in lower grades. The sentence structure was easy to understand, and the pictures provided enough context for the reader to completely understand what was being said.

possible Teaching Points: Even the smallest things in life have interesting origins.

This is Not My Hat

Written by: Jon Klassen
Genre: Fiction picture book
Review:
Very cute book!
Illustrations are very cute and fun. This is a story of a little fish telling us about the hat he just stole from a huge fish. The little fish is swimming fast away from the big fish and is telling us the scenario of how this huge fish didn't deserve this hat and how he will never catch him. It shows situational irony because the little fish has no idea that the big fish is after him. In the end the huge fish gets his little hat back.
Age/Audience
I would recommend this book to a second or third grade reader.
Possible teaching points:
I would use this book to teach about irony, and that if you steal you're only going to get caught.

The Boxcar Children

written by Gertrude Chandler Warner
Genre: Early chapter book
Review
These books are a classic. Growing up they were very popular but i had not read the first of the series. The first book is mostly setting up for future stories, its more of a background of the characters and how they became the boxcar children. Four siblings are homeless and looking for shelter. They mostly work for shelter until they come across the box car. they make a home their and even find a dog. They make many struggle adjusting to their new life in the car.
Age/ Audience
I would recommend this to a 3rd or 4th grade reader that is interested in starting a series. This book is also interesting for children because they're living in basically a tree house.
Teaching points:
Great for young readers and helping with comprehension. Also, with a great support system of family you can overcome any tough time.
