Connections to our world: The book was published at the height of the Arab Spring, which was a major uprising in the Middle East and North Africa.
-
Edit on 5/20/208
In the beginning of the book, it said "dozens" of wars were being fought. I though that that probably tied in with current events in 2011, maybe?

The world outside of the OASIS is filled with lots of chaos and war. One very large problem in the world is in the form of an online corporation called "IOI". They are one of the largest (if not the largest) and corrupted companies in the world. This could be related to Verizon and Facebook if they were corrupt and all powerful.

Real World Connections
While this story is written in 2011, I think that the theme of corporate take over is prevalent in this day and age. The one connection I thought of was the repeal of net neutrality and IOI taking over the OASIS, both are about corporations (IOI in RPO and Verizion & Sprint in the real world) taking the internet and restricting what they don't want us/the characters to see. They can take the internet/OASIS and turn it into whatever they want, also both the IOI and real world companies want to make people pay for the internet/OASIS out of corporate greed.

Power: In the OASIS one of the bigger problems is power being used for the wrong things. An example of this is the IOI. SInce they have a large group of people no one can stop them from doing this. With their groups they cheat in the hunt for the egg. But, since there are no rules written for the hunt they also can't be stopped for cheating. Their power has also taken place outside of the OASIS. As other gunters get farther in the hunt the IOI try to attack them to get the information of things like the keys and gates.

The story that takes places outside Wade's OASIS adventure shows that now most of the US is now homeless or under the poverty line

Ready Player One was published 3 years after the Great Recession in 2008. It left the entire world in economic turmoil. Stocks crashed, and prices rose. It started with the bursting of an 8,000,000,000,000 dollar housing bubble bursting. In the story, everyone is poor. They have to live in stacks of trailers, converted hotels, and camps.
