Argument Essay Practice (P7) by John Damaso

Groups will devise a thesis and set of claims (topic sentences) in response to a sample AP argument prompt. One group member will post thesis+claims here along with all group member names. Use the title of your AP prompt as the title. For this exercise, you do not need to list evidence, but evidence would come from your reading and observations.

What is the value of homework?

Outline

Thesis: Limiting homework is necessary for decreasing the stress levels of students which leads to an increase in their performance and desire to learn.

Claims:

By having less amount of homework, students will have more time to do the activities they enjoy, which will in turn decrease their stress. However it is important to still have some amount of homework because it will cause students to have a sense of responsibility outside of school so that they do not begin to despise school and only enjoy outside activities.

Grade percentages on homework should also be limited because the limitation of grades would cause students to think of the homework as less of a grade and more as an opportunity to learn. This should also increase student’s desire to stop if they are stuck and come in for tutoring or help. Students will no longer obsess over a piece of homework for hours without progress.

Rebuttal:

If students are limited on their homework, they will learn less because they are not applying or practicing enough for them to master the topics taught.

Counter Argument:

With sufficient practice in class and with teacher instruction, it more valuable to practice in class than at home.

Thesis: The purpose of education in the 21st century is to prepare students to enter the workforce.

They must be self-sufficient and make adequate money in order to support themselves.

If not prepared and given the proper background in order to be competitive in the workforce, then students will fail to obtain jobs with good pay and work for minimum-wage.

In order for society to function, students need to learn the necessary skills for complex jobs in order to be successful and support society.

(potential evidence) Majors at colleges are used to adequately prepare students to be integrated smoothly into society. They serve to advance a student’s skills. For example, if a young adult wants to become a mechanical engineer, it’s much easier for them to learn the proper skills for the job.

An education that prepares students for the workforce gives them the opportunity to enjoy other aspects of life.

With a successful career and job, people are able to retire early and leave the workforce.

Counterclaim: Some people may argue that the purpose of education is to focus on social, academic, cultural, and intellectual development so that students can grow up to be engaged citizens

Although people may claim that people can be happier, they might not be more successful. For example, artists make significantly less than other high paying jobs like software engineers and doctors.
