What made you choose teaching Special Needs children in Particular?

I chose this profession because I love Children, and I specifically chose Special Needs because there were so many students in my class that had IEP's and I noticed they needed extra help. I felt that if I helped not only the ones in my class but everyone in the whole school, so I became in charge of the special needs program. I wanted to make a difference in everyone's life, and now that I have I will never go back to being a teacher in a regular classroom.

How have your ideas towards teaching change from year to year?

Well my first year I wanted to quit. I had so many students with IEP's and I had no idea what to do or how to get everyone involved. Now 28 years later, I have so many different Ideas coming from every which way. I am always creating new things, or remaking my old projects to fit a different students learning style.

How does teaching children with special needs differ from teaching other students?

Teaching children with special needs is way harder because something new happens everyday. One day so and so could be crying because of a pencil and the next they could be punching you because they are mad at that pencil. Teaching other students would be more of a daily routine and sometimes things would be different or random, but it wouldn't change their whole life if we have a fire drill like it would for a special needs learner.

What advice would you give me for teaching special needs children in the classroom?

I would say be patient with the students and try to adapt the classroom to help them learn. I believe each classroom should have a different classroom structure that fits their students.

What changes would you make to the educational system with regard to the special need system?

I would have more funds go to the special needs program, and have the classrooms be bigger. We have so many kids go in and out of the classroom that I believe it is not big enough for all of them. I think if we have more funds we would be able to have more learning experiences and books for the students.
