One slave picked his lock and broke out of his chains. He freed everyone else and they seized control of the ship. The slaves were trying to get to Africa, but were unsuccessful. On August 26, 1839, a U.S. Navy ship saw the ship off of the Eastern Coast of Long Island. The ship was brought to shore, where the Africans were later tried for accounts of murder. Only 35/53 Africans were returned to Africa because they either died at sea or in prison while waiting trial.

The President at the time was Martin Van Buren, who wanted the case to be tried in Cuba, where the Africans would almost definitely be killed. He sent a U.S. Navy Ship to pick up the Africans because he thought the court would say the Africans should be tried in Cuba. When the court said the case would be decided in U.S., President Buren got really frustrated.

Not a very good or clear understanding of what happened. It's also not "President Buren". Instead of "one slave" isn't it Joseph Cinque? What about the sailors fooling the slaves by sailing to NY? The effect on America piece should have included greater specifics.
