The infamous hamstring injury, an injury that has plagued the AFL since its inception. In 2021 according to the AFL annual injury survey, the hamstring injury was the most common injury with 33.6 new injuries in the 2021 season. Injuries cannot be 100% prevented in the same way they cannot be 100% guaranteed. However there are certain risk factors that may increase the likelihood and preventative measures that can decrease. In this post we will look at these risk factors and measures.

There are three main risk factors associated with an increase in the likelihood of a hamstring either occurring or reoccurring. these three factors are:
1. No or a poor warm-up
2. Poor hamstring strength
3. Poor load management
These three risk factors are just that however, risk factors. Meaning even if everything is as well managed as possible, injuries can still occur.

How can we reduce these pesky risk factors?

The research points to three major ways that coaches can limit the likelihood of a hamstring injury occurring
Firstly ensuring that the athletes are adequately and appropriately warmed. This should include a range of mobility and activation type exercises, different modes of striding (skipping, A Skip), then finally some high-speed work (sprinting).
Secondly, making sure the athletes have adequate hamstring strength. Especially in AFL where the hamstring is under massive eccentric load, therefore the hamstring requires eccentric strength. The best way to manage this is to ensure that Nordic curls or other eccentric hamstring exercises are included in a strength program for the athletes.
The final way to minimise a risk factor is to make sure the athletes are correctly loaded. Having them overloaded over the course of an extended time means they will be at increased injury risk. Same if they are underloaded too long and they spike their load with a game or a random heavy training.
