Mr. Wataksuki hesitated to leave Manzanar camp after its closing for several reasons which including his fear of the outside world and a lack of resources to support his family. He also felt a loss of control over his life and sense of vulnerability due to the internment camps.

Her father is upset with Jeanne becoming the queen because he thinks she will end up marrying a white boy. Jeanne is also upset after finding out that teachers planned on sabotaging Jeanne's chances of winnings.

Jeanne is accepted into the Boy scouts as she is allowed to participate in activities,but she is not accepted into the Girl scouts because of her Japanese heritage.Her protectors is her brother Kylo he looks out for her. Another protector of her's is Radine a friend who helps her against discrimination at that place.

Jeanne's family don't talk about the internment camp because of shame, desire to move on, and fear of being judged. Jeanne and Kiyo don't talk about their experience when they were about to sit down on a bus stop bench and an old lady came by. She told them, "Why don't all you dirty Japs go back to Japan" (134). They don't talk about how she spit them as well.

The mess hall bells rang for public meetings. For people it was also for better lifestyle, and pretty much better everything. Sometimes those public meetings turned into yelling, and beating sessions. Most likely U.S. forces burst into their room with weapons and had them wait in the resevoir shack.
