Concerns from 218: Schoolwide pages are hard to hear. Can we get door wedges? glass breakers? go bags? rope ladders? What if you do not have all your students with you when you get to the secure location? Is it beneficial for our student population to practice lockdown drills? What if our students are at lunch? Would they be able to hear the announcement? Is there some sort of light that could act as an alarm? Should we pull the fire alarm to alert school to evacuate the cafe?

Scenario 1: Intruder in computer lab. we left the building. heading towards middle school or parking lot. Some discussion about which is the better choice. (Room 4 group)

Facilitated discussion: good choice to go outside. Since this isn't our room, we were not unanimous in our choice of where to go. Takeaway from this is that we need to think ahead of time where is a safe place to go. Things to consider: are we visible to safety personnel? Parking lot might not be a safe choice: safety personnel and media will be there. Suggested: use the fenced in area. Reminder that the announcement will include whatever information is available about the intruder. There was no mention of a weapon in this scenario so it is reasonable to assume there is not a weapon.

Female wearing a long black raincoat. We would go outside again.

Mrs. Gleason joined us and reminded us that to teach the children about this topic we must prepare ourselves because our response may initially be emotional.

More detail on teaching children: we might want to practice walking zig zag and thinking about the safest way out - it might be the front door rather than the side doors.

Discussion on communication and use of phones during an actual scenario. Susan says we will receive a document this week with contact information to use in an emergency. It's recommended that we have our phones with us in case of an emergency. Store these contact numbers in your phone. Some discussion of not jamming the phones during an emergency. Chief Cassidy says the threat will be neutralized first, then safety personnel will try to be doing accountability for staff and students.

Discussion of using shades on windows and doors: Can we add shades on the door windows? Chief Cassidy responds: based on national best practices, shades were removed by safety personnel so they can see into the room in case of an actual emergency.

Why can't you lock door from the inside? Building code. We don't want to trap kids inside the room. Chief Cassidy suggests keeping door locked during day and leave it open so it can just be closed in an actual emergency. Some discussion about turning off lights and locking door whenever children are not in the room.

Scenario 3, Room 4 group: Placentino Art Room going down hallway. Young female wearing all black.

We agree we would go outside again. What if our children are not in our classroom? In caf or specials, etc.? Chief Cassidy recommends getting out and then going around the building to find our students.

What would we do if we had to stay in our classroom? Put them in quiet room or hunkered down behind bookcases. Some discussion about whether to go into the bathroom to hide. Chief Cassidy responds: most incidents are resolved within 3-6 minutes. Intruders are deterred by barriers, ie locked door. Some discussion about whether you can use the courtyard - you can't get trapped there. What about hiding the kids and teacher standing near the door: ChIef Cassidy says stay with your kids. Barricading the door: it serves as a deterrent. Chief Cassidy tells us we should have a controlled higher level of intensity when responding during an actual emergency.

There is some talk about breaking a window if we need to get out - may want to keep a hammer or something similar to break a window.

Some talk of line of sight: will the intruder be able to see us leaving the building? Or will the intruder's location have changed significantly since the announcement was made?

Chief Cassidy: This drill was made to help develop muscle memory so we have played through many of these scenarios in our head and we think about how to respond. Suggested that we practice zig zag walking.

Concerns about doing that were shared.
Question about being able to lock the doors from the inside. This was brought up last time we had the intruder response protocol.
How do we include Paras in terms of learning and getting involved in this when this is ESSENTIAL practice.
Can you hear into classrooms via intercom? The people in the cafe haven't been trained in intruder response, we feel all adults working with children should be, specifically in the lunchroom (paras and staff in the kitchen). Don't hide in the morgue, the doors are locked. OUr job is to protect as many kids as we can. Once outside, call 911 to let them know who you are, where you are, and that you have your class with you. Then stay there! Police will come to you. Should we have students practice a scenario where we run?
