As a child I grew up in Louisiana with my grandmother and Aunt until I started kindergarten. There after I spent every summer with them until I was 14. My aunt was a librarian so books were a big thing in our household. I use to lay in her arms and listen her read books to me. I fondly remember all tof the Little Golden Books with the gold trim on them. We read stories like the Three Little Pigs, The Poky Little Puppy, and more. Thoughts of those moments bring a certain serenity to me now many years later.

As a preteen I enjoyed reading Judy Blume's Super Fudge and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. These books were so funny and entertaining. I actually had a friend who got his nickname of Fudge because he reminded his family so much of this character. As I came into my high school years I began to read mainly required literature like Shakespeare's Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. My love of reading began to fade about this time span of my life.

During this time I began to read books by Terry McMillan and Zane. The book version of Waiting to Exhale was so much better than the movie. The details and emotions just flew off the page and kept me so interested. Let's just say the Zane books were very entertaining. ;-)

Now a days I find myself reading historical articles and books. I find it fascinating to read upon historical people, places, and facts. I like to educated myself on our past and different myths/beliefs. I have also become a fan of Walter Dean Myers. I love his perspectives when he writes and how he tells his stories. As I dig deeper into these courses I find myself intrigued by African American writers, poets and illustrators. It has truly opened my eyes and developed awareness into my culture. I hope to share with all of my students the many facets of reading available. I want them to be able to relate mentally, culturally, and/or emotional to the characters they read about.
