the opening of this article suggests that Nick is misgynist (a woman hater - much like Iago...) but is he? or does he do what he does to Amy because he has no choice????

This article implies that gone girl is both feminist and misogynistic with characters such as Nick an d Amy playing these roles. The writer/director wanted the audience to decide what it was which is why it's so interesting and why there is controversy

Amy and Nick both try to be somebody they are not. There are two main perspectives people can see this through; optimistic and pessimistic. But really, they both couldn't sustain their 'image' of Nick really being like his father-a misogynist who acts violently against any women who
disagrees with him and murmurs "stupid bitch". And Amy, who manipulates men to an exaggerated and terrifying degree, and says reasonable things despite being a murderous madwoman. Her vengeance and her actions can be seen as highly feminine.

"Is it really only girl power, and you go girl, and empower yourself and be the best you can be? For me it's the ability to have women who are bad characters" is a quote from Gillian Flynn who sets out to make female characters that aren't good and are unlikeable in order to show an accurate portrayal of what women have the potential to be which lacks in literature. Amy's good girl speech is made to challenge us by making us relate to the words of an otherwise unlikeable character. The portrayal of what men what women sits so strongly with alot of the female audience and is a very strong manipulation point for Amy.

The idea of the 'cool girl' has become a mainstream idea within society and is not just an ideal explored within the text Gone Girl. In Gone Girl, Amy portrays herself as someone who meets all of Nick's ideals - loves football, video games, cheap beer and eating junk food. It is a theme all to common, where girls present themselves in a way that they think will attract the person they like, only for that facade to eventually fall, as Amy's did when it came crashing down in the course of their marriage. The same can be said for men, where they try to impress women with wit and charm, such as Nick once wooed Amy

Gillian Flynn herself mentions that the idea where a female character fabricates their own rape is a 'trope that exists because it's powerful'. Although such actions is a very powerful move, the other side of the story is that the person who is being accused of the rape will have the title 'Rape Allegation" stuck to them forever. It's a very sensitive topic because such things can ruin a person's life. "I don't write psycho bitches, the psycho bitch is just crazy - she has no motive" Flynn argues; but once again it's the answer that everyone leans towards when a question is hard to answer: the fact that there is no answer.
