Word is a basic and most important skill that students need throughout their schooling, as well as assist them in their professional careers (Howell, 2012.). The use of Word will assist students in their Digital Fluency with core skills that will also become more experienced in the software programs (Howell, 2012.). Excel can be quite difficult to use which is why it is often dismissed by teachers or limited to accounting type activities in the classroom (Howell, 2012.). Using Excel in the classroom will help students learn useful skills that will help them throughout school and beyond (Howell, 2012.). A blog is most commonly used as or part of a website that contains content of an individual’s day to day activities. Some blogs may include just regular entries of commentary or other material such as graphics or videos. Blogging will teach students the experience in creating digital content that can be shared safely online. Publishing tools such as Microsoft Publisher can be an extremely helpful tool for students to learn in primary school (Howell, 2012.). With Publisher, they can use different templates and formats to create brochures, flyers and newsletters to match the learning outcome for the unit (Howell, 2012.). The skills that are taught with publisher are beyond the basic skills that are shown by using Word which will assist them in gaining digital fluency. The idea of web design is the procedure of planning and creating a website, this includes text, images, digital media and interactive elements that are seen on a webpage (Howell, 2012.). There are several programs that are available to use for creating a web page, some include, Dreamweaver, FontPage and Word. For students being able to produce a website shows high levels of digital fluency (Howell, 2012.). Using this technique in class allows students to gain understanding with html coding, programs and hosting which can be helpful for their future education and careers. An idea of using web design in the classroom could be making historical websites for an event or time which is part of the curriculum.
