Easter is a wonderful holiday in Ukraine, and it has many traditions. The word for ‘Easter’ in Ukrainian is Velykden’ - ‘Great Day’, and it is one of the most exciting holidays in the country.
It is celebrated in spring, on the Sunday after the first full moon after Passover (between April 4th and May 8th).
People prepare for Easter in advance.
They bake pasky (Easter cakes) and cook festive dishes. Ukrainians also decorate Easter eggs: dye them with food colouring, paint them, sometimes stick stickers.

The night before Easter people go to the church for service and bring a variety of dishes with them: pysanky, paska , sausages, lard, cheese, etc.
After service, it is time to start the meal and extend greetings. Adults chat together, while kids play a traditional game called bytky or 'egg tapping'.

People greet each other with the words 'Christ is risen,' and 'Truly he has risen'(‘He is Risen indeed’).
In the time of war Easter has become a holiday of hope and future victory. All Ukrainians like it very much!

We celebrate Easter in spring, on the 16th of April in 2023. The week before Easter is a Great week. It starts with Willow Sunday. On Clean Thursday my family members clean our house, yard and wash ourselves. I usually bake Easter cakes. Sometimes I buy them in the shop. I also dye Eater eggs. This year I baked pasky, coloured eggs, cooked traditional dishes. In the morning we also went to the cemetery and in the afternoon we met with our friends.

Великдень ми святкуємо навесні, 16 квітня 2023 року. Тиждень перед Великоднем – Великий тиждень. Починається з Вербної неділі. У Чистий четвер мої домочадці прибирають будинок, двір, миються. Зазвичай я печу паски. Іноді купую їх у магазині. Я також фарбую яйця їдки.

Великдень – прекрасне свято в Україні, яке має багато традицій. Слово «Великдень» в українській мові Великдень — «Великий день», і це одне з найзворушливіших свят у країні.
Його відзначають навесні, в неділю після першого повного місяця після Песаху (з 4 квітня по 8 травня).
До Великодня люди готуються заздалегідь.
Печуть паски (паски), готують святкові страви. Також українці прикрашають писанки: фарбують їх харчовими барвниками, розписують, іноді клеять наліпки.
Увечері перед Великоднем люди йдуть до церкви на службу і несуть із собою різноманітні страви: писанки, паску, ковбаси, сало, сир тощо.
Після служби настав час розпочати трапезу та висловити привітання. Дорослі спілкуються разом, а діти грають у традиційну гру під назвою битки або «стукання яєць».

Люди вітають один одного словами «Христос Воскрес» і «Воістину Воскрес» («Воістину Воскрес»).
У воєнний час Великдень став святом надії та майбутньої перемоги. Всім українцям дуже подобається!

Easter is a religious holiday. We celebrate it in April or May. People bake Easter bread and colour the eggs. Then they go to the church and bless pasky, pysanky and other food. L like this holiday and we have a family dinner on this day.
