There are so many kids who need extra support that just isn't available in a traditional classroom. What am I good at? I am good at talking to anybody and everybody. I love making connections and building relationships with people around my community. Building my own tutoring center will be difficult but I will be able to build relationships with innovators in the field, as well as new students around the city. As a business owner I know I am going to be stressed with finances and students. But I needs to remember to have fun with my students and be the best teacher I can be for them. That means being joyful and playful every day around them. Making jokes, being silly, and helping them enjoy learning outside of the stiff classroom that they may be used to. I also will need to focus on respecting myself and being proud of my accomplishments. One year from now I would like to be substitute teaching in public schools in Colorado Springs. I will be working towards funding and getting myself a space to open my tutoring center. Working with community mentors and my mentors to find the best neighborhood to open my business. Three years from now I would like to be open and thriving. Helping kids all over the city with school. Five years from now I would like to be looking at multiple locations and potential after school snack and food programs to implement to make sure the impoverished kids in town are not hungry when they don't have access to food like they do at school. I think that they are realistic and manageable for the next steps in my life. The book talks about believing in yourself and taking the initiative. Nobody is going to open a tutoring center for me. I have to believe that I can do it and do it for myself. I have always worked hard and that is a necessary skill when opening your own business. I have planned when I want to have my tutoring center open, but I need to focus on what neighborhood it would be best to open it, where to start thinking about funding, what kind of space I want to build, and how to hire the staff in order to have the right environment. It is an amazing job with great pay and benefits. But I have decided that I want more. I want to use my degree and use my passion for kids in a way that helps them. Making the change to open my own tutoring center, leave the job that I have been doing for years, and jump into a new career. It is scary but so worth it.
