If a child can't do math, that is not detrimental to anyone else. However, if a child misbehaves by being disruptive in class or hitting/abusing their peers, it harms the community. <title>We often expect children to know how to behave if they are told once or twice. We expect them to model positive behavior but don&#39;t really teach them. We view them as little adults. But they are not--they are all at different levels in learning positive behavior- Many adults see this as not the same as learning a skill such as riding a bike. Many adults don&#39;t have the patience to help student to learn positive behavior.</title>

<title>Many times there is reasons behind the behaviors and it takes time for those to come to the surface depending on the situation and child. Many times we assume a child should know how to act or react, but that is often not the case or taught at home so it is important to keep that in mind.</title>

<title>It can at times. You have to find a balance and you have to find what helps each child. If a child will really work hard to make sure they don&#39;t lose recess then that might be an appropriate punishment (but its also an incentive--they can earn extra).</title>

<title>Punishment works in some situations, but not many. Self-punishment seems to be more motivating then actual punishment. Our systems plan to rehabilitate but using punishment tends to create more recidivism and resentment.</title>

<title>Often times it seems we rely on old ideas and practices in a system that has historically seemed to rely on punishment. The focus on changing the behavior or compliance rather than developing a skill.</title>

<title>I agree with Ms. Donnelly-Harris. Punishments create resentment. It does not &quot;teach&quot; the proper behavior, but instead uses negative reaction and receive a negative result.</title>

<title>I think we need to retrain adults in current practices. When most teachers were younger, their discipline was punishment. We need to educate our peers in other ways. (Restorative practices!)</title>
