This book is all about first for a little girl in first grade. From going to school, to jumping off a cliff into a lake. She learned that some make her cry, and some make her happy as long as she tries the firsts aren’t so scary. This book I felt would be very good to read to your class on the first day of school, because it shows kids that yes firsts can be scary, but all you have to do is be strong, and try your hardest. I would say teachers could even use this book for rhyme scheme. I would tell readers to embrace the pictures, because there silly and very colorful. As a reader you can also reflect on how you felt during those firsts as well. That would be a good prompt to have students write about is how they felt during those firsts too.

In this story, the child CJ is very relatable to me. I was always poor so I also always asked my parents why I couldn’t have the cool new gadgets that every other kid had. When I was young around this child’s age I too had to go to a food pantry so my family could survive. CJ learned that there is beauty even in the darkest of times. It took me a little while to learn that, but when did I stopped complaining about why I didn’t have a lot of toys or why we had to go to the food pantry, because I learned to be thankful for what I did have. Near the end I realized that CJ and his nana were serving people at the soup kitchen. This made me think of when I became a youth member at my church I would volunteer, because I always told myself if I ever got on my feet I would always help those in need.

“Dad and Pa are as different as can be, except in one important way they both love me” I believe that this quote is important to the theme of the story that you may have two dads. One by birth and the other by marriage, but they are still both your dad’s. This also shows that the girl telling the story realizes that they may be different, but love is the most important concept. This also shows in the story that your family maybe unusual, but as long as they take care of you and love you that’s all anybody’s family is based off of. It also shows that difference can be a good thing in a family. The positive side of having two dads is that they both love the child. Turned a bad experience into a positive one.

Dear Professor,

The book Thunder Cake by: Patricia Polacco, I thought of a lot of things. The first thing I thought of was how I am scared of thunder, and it wasn’t until Babushka said “Brave people shouldn’t be afraid of sound” that I realized thunder is just a sound. I also predicted in the beginning that the grandmother was making this cake so that it would distract the girl from being scared of the thunder noises. I think this would be cool to do in a class setting one day when you’re learning about measurements, and complete the thunder cake in a science experiment. This can also help those students who are terrified of thunder at school. I also thought the pictures were very nice to look at and see how there is a lot of detail in them to show texture especially the rain picture.

                                                                           Sincerely,
Betty Walton

This book was so good at depicting how the African Americans were really treated. When the boy in this book finally got to taste the white water, that’s when his eyes were opened to the new world. I think this would be a good book to show children that even though things were sometimes similar they were separated from the whites. I even found out some information about African Americans in this book that I never even knew where to be true. To me this book should be read starting at 2nd grade in February to teach children about black history month, and you could involve the students in a discussion of why do you think the water tasted the same but had different signs? How would that make you feel? They could write all of this in their journal, or say what would you do in this situation?

This is a book about a young African american girl, and how her life was both living in the south and living in the north. This book shows her struggle as the youngest and living in everyone's shadows. This opened my eyes to see that even when after laws were passed, African Americans still were treated with disrespect, and treated like they were less than. I felt that the quality of the book was outstanding, very easy to follow along. the way the author writes is very short, but flows like any other chapter book. I would recommend not using this in literature circles, but rather using it as a read aloud for 4th to 5th grade. That way the teacher can help the student with figuring out the flow of the book if they get stuck. I also felt that this could show students different ways of writing types.

The book shortcut was very action themed. I believe that the way the author wrote made the tension of the story come to life. When the author would stop one story to begin another it makes the reader want to continue reading becasue they want to figure out how the all the stories connect to one another. Th fast pace of the words in the story make things very action based such as the words suddenly, and quickly and many more. This shows that the characters in the book were in a rush to get to the places they needed to get.

" She's here, Stella," I whisper. "Ruby's safe. Just like I promised" I love this quote, becasue not only does it show the true colors of Ivan, but it shows how much a promise can effect a life. Ivan was still loyal to a friend that had passed away. When we promise things to people often times we mean forever when we say I promise. I can connect to this, becasue when I say I promise, I say and Betty never breaks promises. This quote also showed the climax of the whole book. This is the part where every reader cries, becasue they are finally safe at last.

This book is about students who get a new student teacher in their class, and they think she is a vampire. I would may have this as a fun read, I don't believe in helps enhance the readers comprehension level. This might be for a free read one day. I wouldn't use this in a literature circle, becasue I believe that you could't expand on the meaning of this book. to fellow readers this book would be fun to read Halloween, and maybe tell spooky stories. This book is very funny, and outrageous. it makes the reader use their imagination. I would let only 1st grade comprehension level readers read this book, becasue beyond that its a non challenging book. The one thing that bothered me was that the author never truly stuck with the theme of if the student teacher is a vampire. My question of is she or is she not one never really got answered, which really bothered me. I think out of the whole book it was only mentioned in two sentences.

This was a book about middle school poems. the book starts out about a student worrying about the first day of middle school. Then the student goes to all of their classes. The book starts from the beginning of the year to the end. The student struggles with a lot of worrying, adapting to new surroundings, and developing friendships. The struggles that can come with going into middle school. The book had good parts of middle school, and the bad such as snobs, and gossiping people. I think it would be good to read this weather you are a parent or a teacher right before you have students go into middle school. Show them that it will be scary, but fun. If I were a fithg grade teacher I would read this the last day of school. If I was a 6th grade teacher I would read it the first day of classes. To the reader have fun with it. Have your own imagination of what it is like to be in middle school. Maybe have your own students create a poem on what they think middle school will be like.

This was Rosa Parks biography, and I felt like this quote was defining for our country. This quote was a big saying after the supreme court ruled that separate but equal was now illegal in this country. It all started with Rosa saying no to the bus driver that she would not get up from her seat, when she had a right to be sitting there in the first place. This went down in history for she was arrested, and that is when the people called Martin Luther King jr to help speak for them while Rosa was in jail. The main part that had an impact on America in this quote was one simple word, No. Had Rosa not said those words which caused Martin to try harder for the people we may still be segregated today.

I will have students who may have a stutter and because of that they may have a hard time reading like Victor. I learned from Mr. Spiro that patience is the key to helping students with different disabilities. Often times when you hurry some one whether they are disabled or not it makes them have more anxiety and therefore may cause the disability to become more enhanced. I think also what I learned was giving children a job when they do have a disability helps them realize that they do have a place in society as well. Mr Spiro wouldn't say the word while ictor was trying to say the word to just rush him along, which I feel we do more often. i think patience will help me as a future teacher with students.

The book overall is very inspiring. It teaches readers to not give up on their dreams no matter how many struggles they have in life. This was about two friends one of them a bear, and the other a bird. The bear distracts the bird while the ants redecorate the birds house. Through out the whole novel the bird is complaining that he doesn't like anything that the bear is doing. When they get to his new house The bird is so excited, and surprised that his friend did that for him. i think that ages 5-8 would enjoy this book, because there is humor, and the author did very well at depicting the attitude of the bird. In the younger grades I would use this book to maybe start off the genre of graphic novels.

The only thing that I had a hard time with is why does she call her dad the preacher through out the majority of the book? Sometimes she would call him daddy, but most time it was the preacher she referred to him as. This book I would think would be great to have students do in the literature circle, because the job the connector I feel students would be able to connect to at least one part of this story.

this book is about a little Jewish girl that has to hide from the Nazis with her friends family. I love the suspense of the way that this book flows. One minute you are up out of your seat yelling at the characters, the next you are reading a normal book. I think it would be interesting if we put ourselves in her shoes. What would we feel like if we had to act like we were someone else daughter. I know that for me it would be hard, because I know who I belong to. The one thing I noticed in this book is that the names of the chapters are sentences in the book. i have never seen that before. Most authors will just put in the main concept of that chapter. Often times the author made it feel like you were there with Ellen being questioned by the soldiers. The little girl Kristie was the one that I thought through out the whole book was going to be the one that gave the secret away which surprised me she didn't.

This book is not your normal three little pig story. the author took it and changed the middle of it. He decided to have the pigs bring the book to life, and make it sound like they were running around on the pages of the book. I know in order to read this to my students I would need to read this to 3rd and above. The content of the book maybe to hard for little ones to understand. The way the book flows makes me see that younger students wouldn't be able to read along and comprehend what was happening. The only thing that I found difficult was how abrupt the ending was. it was all action based and then bam it was the end. I would maybe have my students come up with a different ending.

I know for me I hate to wake up in the morning. So I could relate to this poem of how the cat was being slow getting ready for school. This picture made me think of the cat because I know that is probably the cute face it gave its mother when she was trying to wake him up. The funny part I thought was the cat putting shoes on for school. I think it would be funny for kindergartners learning about rhyming words.

The next Very cool how they changed in the book from a boy kid to a girl. The next I like the quote " No one but you knows how you voted" The second to last says teaching children how to be a person who can learn how to lose. The last sticky note says that I like how it ends, and that there maybe a part two.

I would use this book to teach kids that no matter what someone comes to school in we will still treat them with respect. This is about a hedgehog who gets stuck in a sock, but he wears it anyways because he realizes that it will benefit him in so many ways. As he goes a long he gets made fun and laughed at by so many of the other animals, that is until they realize that the hedgehog is the smart one. I would probably use this near the middle of second grade. I feel that there are too many words on the pages for the little ones to actually get their attention. The one thing I loved about thsi book was on the side you could see what animal the hedgehog was going to go to next. That way the students can predict what might come next, and they would actually know the answer.

This informational text is very fun. Not only does it have cool pictures it also has a digital book with it. This would ehlp the studnets who have a printing disability. The thing I love most about this book is that it has so much information you can open it up when you have to teach a certain lesson on a specific system of the weather. With all of the information packed inside of it I would read it to the class, but only to 5th graders. The pictures are actual photographs, and has interesting facts about the systems of weather. In the back it also has pages on how we can help save our planet, and it also has a glossary. One section I found interesting was ice storms, maybe because we don't have a lot of those around here so I learned a lot of cool information about them.

This would be a book that I would read to 5th grade and above. The content is very advanced. I remember reading this book in school, and listening to it after a history lesson. The pictures look like they were water color. The one thing that I loved about this book was that it also brought culture into the story. It showed that the Japanese, believe that if you make one thousand cranes that the Gods will grant you a wish. It also had holidays that they celebrate, and showed the economy is very low income. This could be taught as a history lesson or a multicultural book. One thing I know that I would have a hard time pronouncing the names. two important things of this book would be to show the effects of the atomic bomb, and how innocent lives were taken on that day. The one part of this book that was sad was her not being able to finish the cranes. I thought that it was cool that her classmates finished the project to honor her in her time of life.

Very interesting legend to show how the sun came about. I think that even Christians would have fun reading this storybook to children. This is a new way of seeing how the sun came about. The colors are very bright, and I think it would be a cool idea to have students come up with their own legends. The one thing I found interesting was how in the book it would ask questions for the reader to predict what was going to happen. I found that interesting, because it made me stop and think of what the questions were asking. Before the story is read the teacher could ask the students where do they think the sun came from. This book shows culture with the way they are dressed in this book. I thought it was interesting that there was a sky chief. This shows that there maybe someone who controls the sky.

At the back of the book it had a timeline of what Abe had done. The one thing I did like was how it took Lincolns real life, and added mystical creatures. Its like the squirrel in the story is helping Lincoln tell the story.
