I chose this quote and the picture of the bird because birds, to me, are a symbol of freedom. They can escape suffering by being able to fly freely through the open blue sky, feeling a "cool breeze" over their body, indicating that they have moved away from the negative things haunting them towards a brighter, healthier future.

I always seem to have a thought in my head all the time and stress which can be unhealthy so trying to have a steady head may help improve my days a bit more, as well as being more positive when I have a stressful situation.

This is my citation for this week because the definition of beauty differs for each person, and holding it throughout life is really important and beautiful. Specifically, this citation mentions old age and lively. For example, there must be challenges throughout life, but it would be one beautiful component of thinking as a life trail. It is one-way and could be straight or curved sometimes. In my case, my beautiful life is spent with family and friends. I do not require anything special. Peaceful everyday life is my treasure. Once we find hope in the beauty component based on each person's insight, our lives will be wonderful.

"Communal storytelling was a self-correcting process in which listeners were encouraged to speak up if they noted an important fact or detail omitted" (Silko, 1986, p. 3)

I selected this quote because it describes the impact that storytelling has. This quote specifically reminded me of “The Danger of the Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi. In this Ted Talk video, Ms. Ngozi explains to us that by only sharing a single story, people are unable to formulate different opinions based on different perspectives from what actually occurred. I believe that with the practice of communal storytelling, one should be able to express any details that have been omitted throughout the story to prevent misinformation from being spread. However, I believe that during these practices, it should involve people writing down their thoughts rather than completely interrupting from the story being told. Once the person completely finishes the story, there should be a debrief about any important facts, questions, details, or information that was omitted. This strengthens life events from being shared with the rest of the world. Hence, why I chose to use this picture of this woman explaining a story to a group of children and adults. I especially believe that storytelling is important for younger children because of how opinionated they can be.

Many people believe that aging is the worst part of life, that once you reach a certain age, life loses its beauty. This mindset suggests that many things become unachievable simply because of age. However, this quote expresses the opposite. Growing old is just as beautiful as being young, and once you learn to embrace and appreciate that, you can truly live.

This chose this quote because it expresses the idea of seeing value and meaning over time. It brings to mind how simple it is to think that parts of yourself disappear with age. But instead of viewing that as a loss, this suggests it is a way to understand yourself again. The phrase "living again" stands out it points to accepting life, knowledge along with experience in ways that give more depth to actions and words. It serves as a reminder that beauty is not limited to youth it stays with people through different phases of life.

Traditionally everyone, from the youngest child to the oldest person, was expected to listen and be able to recall or tell a portion of a story... remembering and retelling were a communal process. Even if a key figure... were to die unexpectedly, the system would remain intact. Through the efforts of many, the community was able to piece together valuable accounts and crucial information that might otherwise have died with an individual.

I selected this passage because it highlights the importance of storytelling in keeping history, culture, and traditions alive. Silko emphasizes that oral traditions ensure knowledge is passed down through generations, preventing it from being lost when individuals pass away. This resonates with me because I’ve experienced how storytelling keeps people "alive" in a way, like when my dad shares stories about my great-grandfather, whom I never got to meet. Through those stories, I learn who he was, what he was like, and the impact he had on our family. If those stories were never shared, his memory might fade, but because they are told, he remains present in some way. This passage reminds me that storytelling isn’t just about preserving facts, it’s about maintaining a connection to the past and ensuring that those who came before us are remembered.

"You see that, after a thing is dead, it dries up. Itmight take weeks or years, but eventually, if youtouch the thing, it crumbles under your fingers. Itgoes back to dust. The soul of the thing has longsince departed. With the plants and wild game thesoul may have already been born back into bonesand blood or thick green stalks and leaves.Nothing is wasted. What cannot be eaten bypeople or in some way used must then be leftwhere other living creatures may benefit. Whatdomestic animals or wild scavengers can’t eat willbe fed to the plants. The plants feed on the dust ofthese few remains" (Yellow Woman and the Beauty of the Spirit). The reason I chose this quote was because it really shows the perspective of life and death in the world as well as reincarnation and how the cycle of life works. We see that Indigenous knowledge uses this to display how life circles back around and everything has a purpose in life including nature. We see this with plants and we see this with people in real life. It is meant to open up your mind to bigger interpretations of what life is.

"The dead become dust, and in this becoming they are once more joined with the Mother. The ancient Pueblo people called the earth the Mother Creator of all things in this world.

I chose this passage because it I thought it beautifully described the Pueblo perspective on life, death, and the natural cycle of existence. Rather than seeing death as an end, the Pueblo people saw it as a transformation, one that returns all living beings to the earth, reinforcing their deep connection with nature. The reference to "Mother Creator" and "Corn Mother" emphasizes a worldview where the land is sacred, and human life is intrinsically tied to the cycles of nature. This challenges modern Western perspectives that often separate humanity from the environment. I chose an image that I believed symbolizes the connection between the Earth and Sky as living beings. -Christian Garcia

The speaker's wounded body symbolizes Indigenous trauma, forced assimilation, and displacement, yet they continue to push forward. A powerful image to convey this would be an Indigenous protest, which would symbolize resistance and strength.

I chose this quote because I think it's important and rings true for every group that has ever faced oppression or marginalization. The people that want to hurt or eradicate these groups will often find reasons to turn them against each other and divide them into smaller subsets. When a group experiences infighting, it becomes easier to pick them off one by one, often with the help of people who would also consider themselves as part of that group. The group will becomes smaller, weaker, and less capable of resisting, until at last they will be neatly erased from the public consciousness. That's why it's important to stay together and embrace one another in spite of our differences. United we stand tall, but divided we fall.

Monserrat Aguilar

"In the old-time Pueblo world, beauty was manifested in behavior and in one's relationships with other living beings. Beauty was as much a feeling of harmony as it was a visual, aural, or sensual effect. The whole person had to be beautiful, not just the face or the body; faces and bodies could not be separated from hearts and souls." - Silko

This quote is significant to me because the message that she is sending relates to the idea that beauty is holistic and found from within. She highlights that the Pueblo's definition of beauty challenges Western notions of beauty, often focusing solely on physical appearance. The Pueblo's perspective of beauty consists of actions, relationship, and inner harmony. This philosophy fosters a deeper sense of self-worth and interconnectedness, because beauty is not something that can be attained but rather a way of being. It also underscores the Pueblo belief that people, nature, and animals maintain respect and harmony. This perspective offers a contrast to modern beauty standards, encouraging a shift from superficial judgements to valuing character and connection.

Summer Roybal

This quote stands out to me because it emphasizes to be to held back by our past mistakes and the negativities. I think this is a quote that a lot of people can relate to because we often tend to define ourselves and even other people by our mistakes and not by who we are building ourselves to be, which forces us think of the negativities that are brought with them. This reminds us to just let go of the past and the negative sides to things and just let the positive thoughts take over. I like the way how the author uses the phrase “cool breeze over my body”, because it helps us imagine how good it feels to let go of the past by comparing the feeling to the “cool breeze”, since most people know how good it feels to just stand and feel the cool breeze brush past their body.

I chose this quote because it is not healthy to walk with so much negative energy inside of you. I sometimes have hatred inside of me and I have learned that if I feel that way I take a walk outside and just let the wind hit me in the face and calm myself down. This quote has also made me realize that we should face our problems ahead if we keep them boiled up and not face them we will keep remembering the past and that is not healthy. We should move on and leave the past but at the same time face those problems and solve them you may forget about it but in the future, it may come back to you and that is not a way to live your life and I have learned that the hard way.

I might be speaking for just myself but I feel like we might put what others have to say about our own future more than what we have to say in our own. When we are were (at least when I was) younger, there were some expectations from me and what was deemed to be the best outcome for me. Go to school everyday even if I was feeling a bit under well, have to great grades in order , for one day I go to college. It wasn't if i wanted to go to college, it was always, WHEN I did go to college, these were the things I HAD to do. I felt as though if i didn't go to college I would sort of disappoint everybody that told me that college was my intended path .

To say I haven't enjoyed my college experience would be a lie, I have learned a lot but what if I did decide to go on a different path. What if I wasn't afraid to do something else rather than what everybody would tell me and go to college? That is why this quote strung a cord.

Every resource and every being is needed to keep a society functioning. We use resources like metals and trees to create buildings and other items. We humans get jobs to keep ourselves alive while maintaining a functioning society. An example is construction workers creating tall buildings for businesses for money to gain the resources they need in the environment they live in. We eat animals for food and use animals for tasks. An example is cows, we eat them and use them to obtain dairy products.

In short, every human is dependent on others and the environment for survival.

Andrew Cruz
