You don't want to overwhelm the audience with loads of colours and fonts, when using fonts it's important to think about how they interact with each other, and choose wisely.

An important thing is to let the idea be the main point of focus. Think about where your poster is going to be viewed by its audience and where its surroundings is, is it too modern too old, the main text should be readable by a distance and for all ages to see. Your posters main heading needs to be totally understanding so the audience knows exactly what its about. It should tell a story and leave their minds eager to find out more whether its to go to this website, enter in a draw to win, or attend the imaginative event held.

Although, it is important that when using colours you are culturally sensitive. Colours can provoke emotion and set a mood in the reader. An example, for Chinese the colour white represents death.
