The Boy at the Back of the Class is a book with an incredibly powerful message pertaining to issues around immigration and racism in contemporary UK. The book follows Ahmet, the boy at the back of the class, who has recently moved to the UK as a refugee along with three friends he eventually makes in his new class. The three children including the narrator are very empathetic towards Ahmet and set a good example for how the children reading this book should behave if they are ever in a similar situation. Although the book is political it is nuanced in it's approaches to political discourse and will not confuse the children reading the book. Up until the end of the book the narrator is not named or gendered, this helps to make the book more inclusive and potentially relatable as any child can put themselves in the shoes of the main character.

Use Ahmet as an example of what a refugee may look like and characters like Brendan the Bully on how not to act.
2) Cross-curricular link to Geography. Find Syria on a map to understand the distance Ahmed has travelled. Do a food tasting exercise of Syrian foods and write a review on what the children thought.
3) Similar to the children, write a royal letter to the Queen about an issue you (the child) feels strongly about. Scaffold through giving potential ideas like environmental issues or even immigration issues.

Black and British: An Illustrated History is a non-fiction look into the oft forgotten points in history in which Black British people played a significant part. This is one of multiple versions that features more illustrations than the others versions which makes it more accessible to younger readers. The book starts with the Romans and works through every period since, detailing important black people throughout history and also describing the negative impact of legislation around slavery and racism. The book also features key historical artefacts, dates and documents making it a valuable source for concrete learning and increasing children's cultural capital. This book helps to shine a light on a depressingly invisible aspect of British culture and for this I believe it is a book that every teacher should consider buying for their class.

I think this book would best lend itself to being either recommended reading or for a unit of work. If history us doing a unit on black history then this book would be perfect to supplement that learning. As well as this if a certain child is particularly interested in black British history that would also be good as recommended reading. This kind of non-fiction book doesn't really lend itself to whole class reads as they can sometimes just be facts and facts without a clear narrative to follow.

Or even any unit as the book can help them to look for the impact of black people in that particular era. For example, children could be asked to find out about how black people impacted history in the Roman times and write a report/article on it.
2) Children could be asked to pick a certain historically significant black person or group of people from a list who appears in the book. From this they could go on to create a fact file all about their historical impact.
3) Similar to the last activity. Choose a certain significant figure from the book and learn as much as possible about them, allow children to use other books to supplement the learning. Then do a roleplay activity as or as somebody who knew the significant person and either perform in groups or to the class.

I Can Only Draw Worms is a simple yet quirky picture book that subverts the expectations surrounding picture books. The actual content of the book itself is very simple. It is a simple counting book that also allows the reader to stretch their imagination as the illustrations don't do any of the work for the reader. True to the title the book is simply pictures of worms. It is very tongue in cheek about it's content stating worms can do a lot, but the illustrator can't draw all those things so it's up to the reader's imagination. This is a very light-hearted, humorous book that is for all ages due to it's simple content.

Once drawn have the children write a description of the worm they designed. Based on the age group this could be simple descriptions like "red hat" or full descriptive sentences
2) Have the children make up a story for their worm to go on. Again this can be tiered for different age groups based on how descriptive the stories are. For especially young learners they could instead tell their story which will improve spoken language and oracy skills.
3) Learning Outside the Classroom link. Have the children physically go outside and look for worms where possible. Once the children have found the worms have them write down a description of what they are actually like in comparison to how they are in the book.

We're All Wonders is an adaptation of Palacio's "Wonder" to be better suited for younger audiences. As a picture book it is able to teach a much younger audience about incredibly important values like inclusivity and acceptance of others. The book follows Auggie, a boy with a facial difference in comparison to other children his age. When he is bullied and ridiculed for his difference, he and his dog Daisy put their helmets on and blast off to Pluto. Whilst in space, Auggie and Daisy look down to earth. They see how big earth is and how full of different people it is. This book is a heartwarming story of self acceptance and inclusivity, values which are important for all young children to learn.

I believe this book would be best suited to either recommended reading or a unit of work, similar to Black and British. Children could be doing a unit of work in geography on our environmental impact and this book would work well to enhance the children's understanding of that topic. For children who are interested in our environmental impact this would also be a great book to recommend to them as it is full of facts that child would find interesting.

1) Cross-curricular link to geography. Have the children choose a specific country. Then have them learn all about the impact we have had on that country, then what we are doing to rectify this impact.
2) Learning Outside the Classroom. Take the children outside either to the playground or local park and have them work as litter pickers. This will start discussions between the children on why it is bad for people to litter. Then have the children write either a list of reasons or article on why littering is wrong.
3) Have the children work out their carbon footprint on computers. After this discuss as a class and in groups ho the children can work to lessen their negative impact on the planet through carbon neutrality and green living.
