The first target was the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch, where the horrific attack began at 1:40 PM. The atrocity continued to wreak havoc on more defenceless worshippers when the gunman targeted the Linwood Islamic Centre for another burst of violence. In total the attack killed 50 people and injured 50 more. In a stern show of resiliency and support for their fallen classmates, students from New Zealand high schools performed the ceremonial Haka (a traditional dance from New Zealand, typically displayed in sport before the game begins). This is significant as, traditionally, the Haka was used to prepare Maori warriors for battle. It is empowering to see such a resilient display of courage after this tragedy.

As a result, the father sustained much more complex and damaging injuries than his son. The father was hit multiple times from the gunman, putting his son's life ahead of his own in an attempt to prevent the death of his son. Thankfully both father and son survived the attack and are now in recovery.

Naeem Rashid, this mourning mother recalls the inspirational impact her son's life had on those in their community. She said that Naeem was a role model to other children in the community, and will be remembered for the bravery he displayed along side of his father while saving others during the shooting. Both men did not survive the attack. "They gave up their lives to save other people. And this is what Allah wants from us... It is a religion of peace."

Although the mourning and grief get no easier and the impact on those affected no less severe, the beginning of the burials for those killed marks a beginning of healing for the nation.

One women who was interviewed as to why she was wearing the headscarf said: "Why am I wearing a headscarf today? Well, my primary reason is so that, if anybody else shows up waving a gun, I want to stand between him and anyone he might be pointing at. And I don't want him to be able to tell the difference, because there isn't a difference."

The elderly man said that: "I was hearing the shooting [...] it went on about six minute or more... I could hear screaming and crying, and uh... I saw some people were dropped dead." This chilling first hand account of what transpired that day in New Zealand helps us to understand how a tragedy like this transpired.

At 1:40 PM local time, the first attack began. The attacker unloaded his first weapon, before retrieving another from his vehicle and shooting more people within and outside of the mosque. At about 2:00 PM, about 7 KM east, 7 more victims are killed at the Linwood Islamic Centre by another attacker. By the end of the day, 4 suspects had been arrested, and one was released. Police also investigated a house related to the attack for evidence.
