Summary: Myopia or nearsightedness, is an issue for many worldwide with estimates of half of all children age 5-19 being myopic. Myopia isn't just an issue with blurry vision at a distance as higher levels of myopia have been linked with sight-threatening issues such as glaucoma, retinal detachments and cataracts later in life. Myopia is a condition caused by elongation of the eye which causes light rays to focus at a point in front of the retina instead of directly on it. The MiSight 1 day contacts are designed for children 8-12 years of age and work to slow the elongation of the eye by using ActivControl technology which uses alternating zones of correction and treatment zones in the form of concentric circles. The lighter concentric circles correct vision as traditional contacts would. However, the darker concentric circles are treatment zones used to channel light rays to create "myopic defocus" that has been shown to slow elongation of the eye and thereby slows the progression of myopia. (Hastings, 2020) See illustration below.

This new technology is an amazing development in opthalmology. As someone who's needed vision correction for myopia since I was pretty young, I can say that this technology could be life altering in a very positive way. The thought of an 8 year old wearing contacts is a bit frightening, however, but I am sure with proper education, parental supervision, and close monitoring, the contacts could be well managed. It's exciting to think that it might be a permanent change after wearing the contacts just a few years, but only time will tell.
