Kayla Ratajczak
In the United States in 1893, a widespread depression hit first in America and then moved across the Atlantic. Hundreds of banks had failed and as a result the stock market crashed causing European investors to pull their funds. To make matters worse, agricultural problems faced both the Western and Southern parts of the United States. Many businesses declared bankruptcy and four million people were left unemployed; however, President Harrison did not intervene as he believed this was a natural economic cycle that would solve itself over time. Based on our readings this week, we can see how this Depression eventually led in to the Cold War

As the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States intensified in the late 1940s and early 1950s, hysteria over the perceived threat posed by Communists in the U.S. became known as the Red Scare. Communists were referred to as the “Reds”. The Red Scare led to a range of actions that had a drastic effect on U.S. government and society. Federal employees were analyzed to determine whether they were sufficiently loyal to the government, and the House Un-American Activities Committee, as well as U.S. Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, investigated allegations of subversive elements in the government and the Hollywood film industry.

President Truman and General MacArthur meet to discuss their views on the war in Korea to ensure they are on the same page as far as goals and understanding of the war and the Asian people. This is significant because the meeting shows just how little Americans knew about Asian people and how they blatantly disregarded the desires of the people they were supposed to be helping. The meeting also foreshadows the mindset that lead to the War in Vietnam lasting as long as it did.
Julia Mielke

Following the death of Mao, Deng Xiaoping, a former target of the cultural revolution, managed to maneuver his way to the top of the CCP. From this vantage point, Deng reoriented the Chinese economy to allow for more liberal elements and fewer financial controls from the top down. As a result, and also as a result of improved international relations. China began to rapidly expand its export economy. This was the beginning of China as the world economic power that can be seen today. - Brett Stebelton
