         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Date: May 30, 1854<br></strong>The Kansas-Nebraska Act proposed that the United States be split in two territories, Nebraska in North as a free state and Kansas in the South  as a slavery state. Both states were allowed <strong>popular sovereignty</strong>. The reason it is known as "Bleeding Kansas", is because when they both became states pro-slavery and anti-slavery activists flooded the states and started voting. It overturned the "Missouri Compact" when Kansas became a slavery state by allowing a slavery state about the 36 30° N line.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Date: October 16, 1859</strong></div><div>An abolitionist, John Brown came to Harper's Ferry on July 3, 1859 to give weapons to the slaves. On the night of October 16, 1859, Brown and twenty one others including his six sons invaded the town and started a raid. Towards the end of the night 10 of his men including five of his sons died. His other son went to California to live his life in a free state. His dad, John Brown was arrested and hanged for his crime.          <title>Election of 1860</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Date: November 6, 1860<br></strong>Abraham Lincoln, born to a poor family in Kentucky and grown up and practiced law in Illinois. Some years later three other candidates ran against him for president. The <strong>Constitutional Union Party</strong> was also new and only used in the Election of 1860. Lincoln was a former Whig, and ran on a political platform against the expansion of slavery in the territories. Lincoln won the election of 1860 that some people opposed of and the outbreak of the Civil War began. He was the first Republican president. The 16th president used his time to try to abolish slavery and put the United States together as one. He was at camps, on the battle field, and talking to the generals during the was. Passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, the 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Date: April 12, 1861</strong><br>Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. When Abraham Lincoln announced plans to resupply the fort Confederate Leaders ordered an attack just before sunrise on April 12th of 1861. An explosion happened by the Confederate and it was the first shot of the Civil War and the rest to come. Lincoln refused to surrender the fort and fought. The major effect of the battle was that it marked the beginning of the Civil War.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Date: September 17, 1862</strong><br>This battle was the bloodiest single-day, roughly 12 hours, battle of the war. This battle is also known as The Battle of Sharpdburg. It happened in Antietam Creek, Maryland. What caused the Union to attack the Confederate Army was when the Confederate threatened Washington, D.C. The battle began early morning when the Union Army, under General Joseph Hooker, attacked the Confederate army on the left flank. Surprisingly the Union won at the end, when the Confederate knew the land more. Robert Lee, Leader of the South, lost one fourth of his army. He had a plan to invade the North. For what the Union did, but the Union was already there and a battle happened in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Pemboton tried to stop a couple of things that the Union was in with them, like battles. It was like a battle like the rest, but fighting over the Mississippi River. After the battle on May 22 a fourty-seven day sieged soon happened and when it was over the Union won and gained the Mississippi River on July fourth. Robert Lee traveled and commanded the Army of North Virginia. North Virginia was a Confederate state&nbsp; and had the biggest army out of all he other southern states. This was one of the last few battles of the Civil War. No other southern states wanted to go. As the confederate was heading up the Union found them and a battle started. It ended with Lee surrendering to Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Date: April 14, 1865</strong><br>President Lincoln was going out with his wife to see "Our American Cousin", a once-popular comedy play, in the Ford's theater in Washington, D.C. John Wilkes is a known actor in the south and didn't really get noticed when he was by everyone in the theater. John went up and behind Lincoln's booth and held a gun behind his head and shot. John jumped from the balcony and yelled "Sic Semper Tryannis". He ran out the door, soon the police caught him and Lincoln was sent to the hospital. Lincoln could've survived without the doctors digging in his head everywhere.
