Mia and the Monsters

This activity shows children what they would need to do before going outside in the cold to play and have fun.

How this activity would teach children; they learn words related to clothing and weather. They practice listening following directions and what they wear them.

After reading this book, I would keep the book out and have them grab their winter clothing and have them get ready in order of the book and go have fun outside.

We are going to read a book called Mia and the Monsters. We will act out some parts of the book together.
Reading this book teachings language learning by teaching the children what is what, getting them to point to what they know which is which.
The extension activity would be going to their cubby to show me their outdoor clothing.

In this activity children will learn and participate making sounds that are around them. As an educator you will explain the rules to the children and set an example to them while you have pictures/flash cards of an object. This activity will teach children the sounds and gets them thinking when we ask question of what these objects sounds like to them.

I would ask the children if they know the song, if they know it, i would ask them to sing along for the other children to learn it too. I, then would sing with them. Teaches them that they have 4 fingers and a thumb. It would be great for them to learn in both English and Inuktitut. I would get the teachers to help by letting them sing along with us. Use our hand to teach them.

This activity is book is about looking for colours, which helps the children to recognize each of the colours. This book also helps the children to identify their favourite colour. This book also helps the children identify shapes.
Explain how this activity teaches or includes language learning
This activity gives children time to remember what the colours or shapes look like, they can name colours and shapes.
Create an extension activity
With this book, it is about identifying shapes and colours. I would ask the children to look for an orange ball, if there isn’t enough, I would ask the rest of the children to look for orange circles.

This is an activity about your pointy, thumb, middle, ring and pinky finger. It is sung in Inuktitut and to learn about thumbkins.

I will ask the children if they know this activity and teach them, first by showing what they should do and ask them to repeat after me. It’ll be in Inuktitut version but I myself need to learn the lyrics. It can be taught in both English and Inuktitut versions.

This activity teaches them about their fingers in English and Inuktitut.

For longer extensions, we can move around our fingers, explain to them which is what or ask a child to come up and ill use a random finger, and ask the child what is it in Inuktitut.

the name of this activity is called “What do you hear”

The educator will hold up flash cards of animals and will ask the children to sound out the animals. We can also act out the animal.

This activity will teach the children that their voice can be used to make sounds to, not just words.

During circle time or even after snack time, gather the children and tell them to pay attention to the teacher. The teacher will tell the kids what were doing and pull out flash cards, ask them what the animal is and ask them what sound does the animal make. If they dont know the sound, show them how the animal sound and ask them to what they do and copy the animal.

I love doing this activity with the children because helps them remember shapes and colours.

Mia and the monster have many different kinds of books that explain the shapes or colours.

Reading it to the children and telling them to go find the shape or colour. Seeing them come back with the colour or shape we asked for makes me proud.
