This week, we learned the purpose of colors and the meanings that correlate with each color, specifically in lighting. According to Hegemann and Oulasvirta (2024), colors capture attention visually and intensify accessibility to make it readable and more transparent. It makes any product or brand extend its clarity and affects users' behavior emotionally. Colors and emotions are mostly connected depending on how people connote them. Red is usually associated with anger, danger, or aggression (Elliot & Maier, 2014), but it also can be interpreted as excitation and cheerfulness (Wexner, 1954). The design principles in lights need to be meaningful to achieve an impact for the "audience" to conclude the artwork. Designing with lights must be intentional and communicate the ideas clearly to manipulate people's eyes and minds into creating a whole new meaning towards the visuals they see.

Academic :

In the American Journal of Psychology, Lawrence E. Marks discussed how lights and color psychologically correspond to music or sound; one of them is that the visual experience interprets the dimensions of auditory experience by its quality and intensity. Where visual relates to hue, auditory connects with pitch. A result of research by Simpson, Quill, and Ausubel (1956) stated that children systematically associate higher pitch with a hue like yellow and less likely blue. For this project, EXHILIRATING and SERENE will be the focus adjective. Exhilarating relates to excitement and joy, using warm colors like red, yellow, and orange (Babolhavaeji et al., 2015). Serene is usually parallel with calm, peaceful, and relaxed. Maden et al. (2000) investigated how several colors have similar and dissimilar meanings in 8 different countries, where all these countries agreed that green, white, and blue equate with "calming," "peaceful," and "gentle."

The main focus for this week is to collect ideas and inspirations that can support the idea. Do some research and watch tutorial videos on how to use Pharos to create the lights successfully. Currently, I have yet to try much on using Pharos, but I will play around with it next week. I am trying to make a mood board for the colors that will suit the adjective "Exhilarating" to ease the process of working out the whole project. For the video, I am still deciding what kind of video to use and what should be included in the video to radiate calmness and peace through the content and sound.

Creative practice :

Exhilarating

Exhilarating is the adjective that focuses on making light and sound using Pharos. Several inspirations are taken from artists who create artwork or light installations that use vibrant and warm colors to create an exhilarating sensory experience or emotions; one of them is the infinity mirrors by Yayoi Kusuma's lightwork, which uses vibrant colors and unique patterns and objects to reflect the lights to the mirror in the ceiling, creating a warm yet joyful environment.

In week 2, we gained more knowledge about emotions and the different types of knowledge itself. Emotions are crucial in making or designing any work that focuses on multisensory experience or would like people to feel feelings through our artwork. Generally, the intended emotion in a product that designers make will reach differently for the user experience (Norman & Ortony, 2003). Many emotional arousals are expressed when confronted with multisensory and multisensory experiences. Therefore, considering several questions such as "How can I make an experience that can affect people's arousal highly?" or "What kind of impact can my work have?" is crucial for this project. Having more knowledge from different perspectives is also essential; understanding how or what things they see or experience can make them respond to their emotions and if those are the same emotions we intend them to feel without actually second-guessing and positioning our thinking as how other people will respond.

Academic :

As stated by Sievers et al. (2019), Arousal is the dimension that shapes our behavior through the emotional experience we face. Sighing means dissatisfaction, jumping means joy, crying means sad, and many more actions that most humans do to "represent" their emotions. Humans' emotional responses are usually based on how they perceive the environment. Turley and Milliman (2000) mentioned, "Sensory input from our environment plays an important role in how we feel and behave." Thus, the observers may have a specific reaction when they are exposed to specific smells, the luminosity of lights and colors, and the loudness of noises as well.

creative practice :

One multisensory experience I would like to highlight for this week is an immersive project run by 24 an old producer named Stephanie Singer. In the video above, she tried to make the audience "taste" the music by activating our smell, tastebuds, and touch senses. Stephanie and her team are trying to figure out how sensory stimulation can strengthen the experience through classical music and to know if it is possible to escalate an experience of other senses just by activating one sense and how. She is inspired by a neurological condition called synaesthesia. Asher et al. (2006) define synaesthesia as a condition that merges one sense with another, creating an unusual sensory experience (for example, sound evokes color).

Technical :

This week, the main focus was on Pharos since it is an unfamiliar software for this project. After some research about Pharos, the goal of the system itself is to "provide high positioning accuracy in a low(zero)-cost and easy-to-use fashion." (Hu et al., 2013, p1). Pharos leverages existing lighting systems for localization, allowing it to be gradually implemented without needing a centralized database. It is designed for easy setup, enabling devices like smartphones to determine their location with minimal interaction by passively listening to the lighting infrastructure. The system provides high accuracy and precision in localization.

However, I have learned the general section of Pharos and had several ideas on how I want the lights and sound to match and have a one-on-one relationship. After several discussions and feedback, I will focus more on matching the lights with the sound and, if possible, will try to add visuals to it. Since making the lights have a roller coaster motion seems impossible, especially in the Capitol, I plan to create an exhilarating visual that can complement the lights and sound as well.

In week 3, we did many peer reviews and got feedback for our project ideas. After Assignment 1, I received valuable feedback that I tried to apply to my project. In my initial idea, I planned to make a roller-coaster feeling with the lights and the video game soundtrack. However, after the feedback, I noticed that the lights at the Capitol wouldn't be able to achieve the big picture of my idea perfectly, and the motion of the roller coaster wouldn't easily reach the viewers. Therefore, I decided to focus more on the video game soundtrack and make a one-on-one relationship between the sound and lights by trying to match the beats and melody and choosing the appropriate colors. In this way, I hope to showcase the exhilaration of playing video games through the soundtrack, motion, and the colors of the lights I designed.

This week's progress is significant compared to last week. I managed to make almost 1 minute of light in Pharos and have explored the features they have in their software. However, I've been using the wrong software this whole time, so I couldn't showcase my draft and need to start making it in the older software. However, I think this is an excellent opportunity for me as well since I wasn't able to focus on the colors and the transitions of the lights before, so starting week 4, I will be focusing on matching the lights with the sound but also try to figure out the colors that I would like to use so that it can radiate the feeling of exhilaration. After seeing other students' works at the Capitol, I should also tone down the saturation and intensity of the lights.

Furthermore, I will use less bright colors because the room at Capitol is rather dark, so I don't want to make it too bright. I've made a timeline for assignment 2, which helps me be more organized and know which one to prioritize first. For the next three weeks, I will be focusing on Pharos.

(2019) investigated if color grading principles in video games can increase the player's immersion experience. They found out that it also affects their performances and behavior.

As for Serene, I also researched audiovisual and color grading in films and videos. Since I changed my idea for Serene, I explored how looking and listening to nature's images and sounds can lessen stress on a person and how looking at nature can give a serene emotion. One journal I would like to highlight is Naef A. C. et al. (2022) research, which compared the effect of audiovisual, visual-only, and audio-only on people's heart rates and emotions.

This project combines melodic-techno music with innovative visuals, creating immersive performances. This also enhances the emotional impact of the music, creating a connection between the artist and the audience.

Academic :

For this week's research, I tried to focus more on my ideas for the Pharos project and the colors I wanted to use to apply "exhilarating" to the lights and support the sound. In a book called "Applications of Evolutionary Computation," there is a chapter called "Recomposing the Pokemon Color Palette," where they explain how the design principles of colors of non-player characters are made to inform and guide game designers in creating new Pokemon and to predict the type of unseen Pokemon sprites. Although most of the research is about the data of Pokemon, there is a small section of it where they explained how the choice of colors could help us to identify specific elements of non-player characters, such as water, fire, etc., or represent the exact type, like fighting or psychic. This research helps me to choose which colors most Pokemons have, which, from what I see, are mostly yellow, red, and blue. Therefore, I would like to implement these colors into the lights to represent those "non-player characters."

This piece is interesting since they used elastic strings as a medium to link the objects and make them interactive. A base sound represents the ship's body, followed by several sounds in each object. Visitors can use the strings to "communicate" with each other, resulting in sounds and lights that appear in the middle of the strings. I want to focus on how the lights are synchronized or support the sound since this is how I plan my project. Although hitting all the beats or parts of the soundtrack is too complicated, I wish to successfully showcase several crucial parts of the soundtrack nicely through the lights.

However, this is an excellent opportunity for me to focus on the colors and to discover new sections of the soundtrack that I want to emphasize and focus on. I used the smaller layers and groups of the Capitol lights, making me work slowly. But I am thinking of maximizing the use of every part of the capitol so it can be more exhilarating and fun. I discovered the primary colors that I will use for the whole project, which are gold, red, and blue. Using the lights, I would also like to make a storyline that shows when a player is playing the game and wins.

This week, we had feedback in class and at Capitol for the pharos and our concepts. My concept and ideas are mostly the same after the evaluation, although I needed to make several changes to my Pharos project. What I imagined to happen in Pharos couldn't have been portrayed better when I saw it in the Capitol, making it a bit challenging to discover which parts I needed to change and to find out what happened with my works. I wanted to focus on several pieces of feedback, such as my lights feeling too arbitrary because of the range of color palettes that I used, making it look very random. I cannot specify the color palette for the entire project.

Moreover, the lights that I envisioned to be bold-bright turned out pastel when I viewed them in the Capitol. I set the wrong intensity and several settings, leading to this outcome. However, I am committed to resolving these issues in the coming week before completing the entire project. Darrin's suggestion to work on both assignments simultaneously was also noted, and I plan to start the second project next week.

Academic :

After the feedback on my draft for the Pharos project, I tried to research more about the connections of colors and emotions, what kinds of colors, and how the two can connect. Wilms, L., & Oberfeld, D. (2018) explained that the emotional effect of colors is not mainly focused on their hues but also significantly influenced by cooperating saturation and brightness. As I read through the research, I tried to implement saturation for my project, where I needed to make the lights highly saturated to create a sense of excitement and energy. Additionally, warm hues like red and orange are usually associated with higher arousal. In this case, I plan to minimize the range of the color palette and boost out the primary colors more.

It's frustrating, and I work a bit slow because I tried to put colors on several groups of lights outside the default, but sometimes it doesn't work. However, I finished around 45 seconds from my whole 2.30 minutes this week. The tutors helped us evolve our central project ideas and progress by giving critiques and feedback and sharing their ideas. By the end of Thursday's class, I had decided on a song for the second project, called Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Part. Darrin recommended this artist, so I tried to explore his work and got stuck with this song. Since my word is serene, this song suits the serenity of the idea because it is tranquil through its simplicity and repetitive structure. By using this kind of music, the ideas can be pictured clearly by synchronizing and capturing the scenes that can support the music itself. This song could also express the scenery's serenity since it is repetitive and can set the mood wonderfully (The Crossed-Eyed Pianist, 2012).

Although the book does not explicitly mention serene emotions that can be achieved when making a film, and my idea and focus for this project do link with cinema movies, I can take some points such as cinematography, the king of the cuts, and the color palette for the video. For now, I wanted soft-muted colors like green and blue since they can evoke calmness and serenity (Li, H et al., 2022).

By extending several parts, I aim to have a more precise flow and make it more understandable rather than just dumping everything in. Since it was a bit laggy and the software couldn't handle too much of my initial idea, I tried to tone it down by deleting some parts and extending the previous one while still trying to aim for that exhilaration. By the end of next week, I aim to finish at least half of this project (around 1 minute 30 seconds).

This week, we had a feedback session for the pharos and saw some works by Mark Hooper. He showed his previous works related to multisensory experience, and he explained the things that work and don't for each project, which helped me to have a new insight and to know that any project can be received differently by the audience. Reviewing his works reminds me that what I think is enjoyable, perhaps terrifying, or other emotions, the audience may receive it differently, and it's arguable. However, during the feedback process, I received a lot of helpful feedback, especially for my Pharos project. Several other students thought it was exhilarating already, and they felt like they were in a video game while watching the lights. However, I still need to make some adjustments to the colors and add the length to the song a bit more since currently, I already have 1 minute and 30 seconds, which is considered decent enough because if I make it any longer, it will be too much and more like overwhelming rather than exhilarating.

In this week's research, I focus on the second project, a video with the word serene. As Ulrich et al. (1991) mentioned, the exposure of nature towards humans can involve a shift emotionally to a more positive state and reduce stress. Although my target audience or primary focus is not for stressed people, I want to reduce stress and bring peace to them when watching. Since watching nature is relatively cliche and too basic, I researched what people tend to see to make them feel relaxed or evoke that serene feeling. However, since not many things other than nature are related to serenity, I shifted my focus to spatial choreography in the video. Movement is vital for video, such as creating essential context and meaning to the video; proper movement can also evoke the emotions we would like to achieve (slow and gentle movements), and also by making visual blur on the background of the movement can heighten emotional response (Saad et al., 2012). Therefore, I want to incorporate movements from transportation, people walking, animals, etc. This way, the audience will not get bored just by seeing a still-shot video.

For this week, I tried to finish the Pharos project since we had a feedback session on Thursday. I initially aimed to finish half of the song to understand the whole project. I deleted some parts that I did last week and redid the entire part since the flow is too arbitrary, and some sections are still not synchronized with the music. I also extended some parts, but during the feedback session, I was told to extend more since it looked like I was in a hurry and too short. I finished in 1 minute and 30 seconds, and people think it's enough already because if I extend it more, it will be too much. Therefore, the aim for next week is to add the ending a bit more (approximately 30 seconds) to get a clean finish. I also changed several colors, deleted some that didn't match the overall, and tried to cut down the color palette.

For my second project, I had several shots in hand and started to merge the clips and color-grade the videos. Although I still need more shots, I will also focus on the color grading and figure out how to evoke that serene feeling through the video. I shot some scenes that I felt could have the feeling of calmness. However, I will try to get feedback next week and hope to finish at least getting all the clips together by next week.

Since Melbourne is a place with lots of busy streets and filled with people, I researched how to capture that serenity despite the busyness in the city. According to Park and Lee (2017), these situations can be seen as "slow cities," which usually emphasize elements such as peacefulness and quality of life, and they can evoke positive feelings toward viewers. Highlighting these aspects suggests that slow-motion imagery or video can arouse serenity and calmness. Therefore, in the video, I want to incorporate several effects that can create calm feelings, such as slow motion and dreamy quality, to reduce sharp lines and to make the visuals feel more gentle and inviting.

This week, we did a feedback session and visited a gallery at RMIT. The visit to the gallery was a unique experience, and many things are easier to understand by reading the explanation. However, I like the part where they used hard plastic to cover the colored light since it made the lights look softer. Also, the pattern they created using hard plastic is simple yet complex. A lot of inspiration can be taken from the gallery, but for me, it doesn't have that heightened multisensory experience enough.

However, I did try to change a bit for some sections and also tried to focus on the colors used. There are still some parts that I didn't like, and I will tweak more before the milestone presentation next week. I'm still trying to find sounds that can suit the last 30-second parts, but I already have some ideas on what kind to add. I'm thinking of adding a broken game sound or a sound that says "u win," or "u lose," or maybe "the game that you played is over." I probably will use the sound of Google or will try to use AI for that.

I added some effects to the video, which made it look dreamy, and I also added an effect on the intro for the title, which made it look like the words came out from the train. I still need more shots since this video only took 1 minute, so I need to find more places to evoke that serenity, such as running water, gentle breezes, or rustling leaves. I also did some color grading to make it look calmer by using cooler tones.

There are still some things I would like to improve for presentation skill wise, but overall I'm satisfied with what I presented and the pharos project as well, although there are still some parts that I need to add more because some sections of the song can be shown more with the lights. The video of my second project could not be seen by the others because I forgot to do some settings on the google drive but I felt like it still needs lots of editing towards the effect and still need more shots because currently the video looks a bit boring and too plain in my opinion.

Li, X et al. (2019) did research in virtual reality that is designed to help cancer patients cope with the condition they are facing. According to them, the sense of serenity can be applied to any immersive video by using the core components, in their case are distraction therapy, immersive environment creation, and many more. I am planning to incorporate several nature sounds to enhance the serenity and also made some slow motion edits in some clips.

I had some feedbacks for my light which I will try to adjust next week and try to finish it by week 11. There are some parts where I still can add more so I will try to focus on those and also tighten up the timeline.

For the last part of Pharos, I added some sounds like glass breaking, broken computer sound effect, and "game over" sound.

To further understand the difference between emotion and mood, I researched since this plays a big part in making a heightened multisensory experience project. Beedie, Terry, and Lane (2005) state that emotions and mood can be distinct by several vital aspects, such as anatomy, where emotions correlate with the heart, while mood relates to the mind. In this case, the specific events or objects usually cause emotions, while moods have a more nebulous cause and many more. These aspects lead me to question whether it's possible to evoke emotions but not unwanted moods. This research further explains that it's possible since specific events typically trigger emotions and are often only for a short period. At the same time, moods are more prolonged and usually influenced by various factors. This study notes that emotions are frequently linked to identifiable causes and are more intense and fleeting, while moods are more stable and less clearly defined. Therefore, I don't need to worry much about changing people's moods while watching my project, but I need to emit the right emotions according to the chosen word.

For my second project, I am nearly done with the shots I needed for the whole video. I'm just trying to figure out how to make it more interesting but still keeping it minimalize. I tried to make it into different sections, which can be seen by the transitions given in each section. I tone down the dreamy effect as well so that it's not too much but still have that wanted effect in each shots. Slowing down speed of the video also helps to create that sense of calmness and prevent the rushness and busyness of city.

I focused on finishing the assignments this week, at least having most of them finished and will focus on the details next week. I didn't do much research for this week because I already knew what to do and what I wanted the project to look like. I applied all the theories and techniques I've learned before to the projects, hoping they would evoke the correct emotions or feelings when the audience watched them.

To remind myself how to evoke the aimed emotions, I researched emotions in design. As indicated by Crossley (2003), some strategies are outlined to evoke the right emotions when designing; some of them are cultivating a deep empathy towards the users or, in this case, the audience, utilizing various media forms like colour lights to communicate the emotional essence of the design effectively. After seeing the strategies needed to evoke the right emotion, my project has reached the terms, especially for the Pharos. Using bright and bold colours, a contrast combination, and a range of colour palettes supposedly evokes the audience's exhilaration.

I finished my Pharos project this week, tweaked the start a bit, and tried to tighten the timeline for some parts. We were supposed to check our project in Capitol this week, but the software had a problem, so I'm still unsure what the end part will look like. Overall, I'm satisfied with how it turns out and will wait for the feedback session in Capitol to monitor which part I can add or delete before the final submission.

I had a couple more shots for the serene project and added some transitions between clips. I toned down the dreamy effect a bit because it's too blurry. I cropped the sound by a few seconds in case it's too long and to aim at serenity, not boredom.

For this week, I finished the small details for my Pharos and video project, refining some parts that I could refine to make it better. We didn't get to test the Pharos in Capitol again since the software was still clashing, so I could only slightly change the project. I added some parts to make it more exciting but manageable, and I hope the colours I chose are not too pastel (for the last part) and the right colour to still evoke the same emotions as how it starts. However, this project taught me many new things and how to use new software. It was challenging but exciting at the same time, triggering ideas and creativity in me to create something I had never done before.

Since this week, I have only refined parts of my projects, and I'm trying to figure out what to research about the project itself. I researched how to present when presenting: prepare well, have clear and structured content, and use visuals effectively. For my final presentation, I would like to implement these points.

I finished the projects, and I'm satisfied with what I made. I made some modifications to the video project (I tried to change the order of some videos and control the speed of the video to make it slow). I also refined the dreamy effect since it was too much when I first exported the first final draft. For the Pharos, I added a bit for the ending part, but I still need to see what it looks like at the Capitol.
