We are missing out on opportunities to review care plans, implement changes and miss out on observing vital assessments and learning opportunities from our mentors. Additionally our off duties provided by the ward manager are non negotiable and coincidentally when the ward is short of staff which I feel is wrong. Examples drug rounds and many nursing assessments   as often as they should. I understands its  may be due to the number of COVID cases in my ward however, missing out such opportunity was not  great at all.
Also, my  practice assessor comes across as very aggressive and unprofessional the way she talks to student nurses in front of patients.

However, I’ve tried to think outside the box and get the most out of experiences wherever I can. 

I’m a bit worried because I still haven’t had the opportunity to get Mother’s and babies signed off as part of my OAR. I tried to complete this during this placement but hit blocks in terms of COVID and staff not replying to me. I’m hoping that I will have an opportunity to do this next placement. ]]> 2021-02-05 13:46:36 UTC https://padlet.com/jessielutwyche/p48d1h74ys75q25s/wish/1168179164 https://padlet.com/jessielutwyche/p48d1h74ys75q25s/wish/1169174968 I have enjoyed my placement and have learnt a lot, however I have felt a lot more tired on my days off than compared to previous placements.  I don't know whether this is due to lockdown pressures (reduced exercise, unable to see loved ones etc.), the emotional impact from witnessing very ill patients/deaths or because I feel that a lot more is expected now that we're third years.  Especially after being treated like a HCA on my 2.2 placement, it has been a big jump.  The staff have been very supportive but I feel that the university hasn't been very supportive to us.

Fortunately, all member of staff, practice supervisors and assessors have been very supportive unlike the experiences of many others, which I can see from the posts here. The challenges of covid, short staff, filling gaps for HCAs, emotional draininage are inevitable in all areas I guess. Obviously, the placement could have been more smoother and better if the pandemic was not here but we are pulling it all together and I can already spot the light at the end of the tunnel. For this reason, I wish we as military students had had the option to opt in to the deployment of 12 further weeks on placement. As much as I was enjoying my ward's speciality, it was really rewarding working with COVID patients when we became an ITU-stepdown ward. After feeling a little helpless during previous lockdowns,  it was great to be involved in patient care again and witness previous ITU patients be discharged to their families again.
All of the staff worked in unison to deliver amazing quality care, and some days I actually felt competent enough for to qualify.
