In Ben Ratliff's Every Song Ever, chapter 14, entitled "Eyeball to Eyeball", discusses the concept of closeness. While making the Beatles the centerpiece of the chapter on “Closeness”, Ratliff includes the definition, “two or more musicians, or musical elements, acting in the purest coordination” (page 313). I strongly agree with Ratliff's argument pertaining to closeness and believe that closeness is the idea of perceived physical space in music.

Playlist Examination

After examining Ratliff's playlist, I selected to discuss The Beatles. Ratliff includes, “the earlier Beatles, through Help!, contained the marvel of closeness between the voices of Paul McCartney and John Lennon" ( Ratliff 318). In a band, when musicians share closeness, they are more prone to exceed in their success. Ratliff continues on to state that The Beatles "knew [their] power; they celebrated it, were celebrated for it, could hardly contain it, may have been frightened by it, may have tried to frighten each other with it”(page 318). As every Beatle fan knew, the men in the group were really close friends before hand-- merely inseparable. Until the band slowly became less friendly and distant, their was a flame in the industry. As the closeness depreciated, so did their band and passion to create more music.

After sampling through my music for the element of closeness, I was lucky to find one of my favorite pop bands as a perfect example. The band I chose that exemplifies this element best is Thirdstory. Thirdstory is a three man band that utilizes a lot of rich harmonies, adlibing ( oooh's and ahhh's), and mind-blowing range. Surprisingly their band was formed in a college dorm room out of boredom. I find it quite intriguing how Ratliff's explanation of the effect on closeness in a group or between musicians allows them to succeed, applies to all types of musicians outside of the ones that were listed in his playlist. Thirdstory is a very tight knit group since before they became a band, therefore they had to luxury of musically relating to another easily. As stated in Ratliff's book, “the connection between them becomes the power source, creating enough energy for “the rest of the band to feed from or mirror” (Ratliff 321)

One of my favorite songs by Thirdstory is, Searching For a Feeling. In this song, not only does it sound immaculate, but the harmonies are phenomenally smooth. I feel as though one cannot achieve such grace and fine tuning without a strong bond or Closeness as Ratliff exclaims, between musicians.
