I have worked with students with communication disorders and who require a device to communicate their needs. Assistive technology service assists in the selection, attainment, or use of AT for a child. Although I have not seen this mentioned in any of our books I am throwing this idea out there as it has been very helpful with my own children. We use noise-canceling headphones to help with concentration efforts. One device that many of my students use within my classroom is called co-writer, which is a word prediction software. This allows my students who are diagnosed with a learning disability in written expression, to be able to write lengthy compositions. They login to a computer and access a word document, they plug in the USB that has the software on it, then they start typing. You type in one letter and the top 5 words that start with that letter pop up. If the word tat you want is on the list, you click it and it types it for you. If not, you type in the next letter of the word and more options pop up. Once you have a word typed, it will auto predict words that make sense to come next that you can chose or you can start typing your own. These devices, some as simple as a highlighter, help to organize and keep on track the individual with a learning disability.
