Seeing as there are a variety of careers in protecting the wildlife and ensuring their future, it is hard to choose just one career path. A wildlife rehabilitator cares for hurt and sick animals with the main goal being able to release them back into their natural habitat. Typically zoos, aquariums, and rehabilitation centers are where the line of work takes place. Wildlife refugees and reservations are also helpful in healing these animals and getting them back to where they need to be. Having realized that you do not need a high level of education to be a wildlife rehabilitator, I will start off as one and then make my way up to becoming a zoologist and study the behavior, population interactions, and lifestyle of specific animal species.

Wildlife rehabilitators make half of what a zoologist would make. Starting pay is roughly around $33,000 whereas a zoologist's starting pay is $62,000. Benefits include paid vacation, health and life insurance, as well as a 401k or other retirement plan. Zoologists work 40 hours per week, more or less, and it is an irregular work schedule due to weather conditions and like factors.

Communication skills are a key factor that needs to be taken into consideration. Public speaking and scientific papers are a couple of examples that will utilize this skill. Critical thinking, problem-solving, observation and outdoor skills are also very important. Emotional stability and stamina is a must due to the nature of the job, because with wildlife, it is no telling what you will see nor experience.

As a wildlife rehabilitator, you solely need a degree in some type of biology. As I make my way up to becoming a zoologist, a bachelor's degree typically is what is required. To advance beyond entry-level, I will need to accumulate a master's degree in zoology. Animal shelters, zoo workshops, and Humane societies are great to start off for hands on learning experiences. All in all, I would need 4-6 years of college education in order to have secured a spot in the work force. An Associate Wildlife Biologist Certification is also required. Due to the fact that the government funds wildlife programs and research facilities, the expected growth rate for jobs in this field are lower than most occupations. However, there will be a demand for zoologists to study the impact human population growth has on wildlife and their natural habitats

A day in the life of a zoologist varies. Typically, they will oversee the care and protection of zoo animals, working alongside other scientists and zoo directors. They are frequently asking next level questions and think critically about efficient ways to maintain and manage animals and their habitat. Zoologists also estimate the plant and animal populations, assess characteristics such as origin, interrelationships, classifications, diseases and genetics of species. Some days require you to get extra physical and backpack through diverse forests, rain or shine. Personally, I think that is why this job is so interesting, you never know what to expect.

There are those who do have mixed feelings about zoos and the purpose behind them. They are primarily for breeding endangered species in captivity and later reintroducing them into the wild where they rightfully belong. They also aim to help teach visitors the relevance on animal conservation and why we need to end our selfish ways because this is their planet too. The late Mahatma Ghandi once said, "the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
