Experiential Learning by anne robertson

How do you, or might you, create more opportunities in your subject for longer term learning projects that challenge students to engage physically as well as mentally?

Which subjects might benefit from more practical learning? How do you or could you work with colleagues in different departments to develop cross-curricular projects?

My year 12 English class is a good example of this. But I haven't done the tasks with them yet. I just have my fingers crossed. There weren't enough text books that I wanted to teach. So the students are studying different novels this year. They will be self teaching I guess and recording their work in different (exciting and memorable ways). The kids reading Paper Towns are going to build a paper town that contains all their research and information. The ones doing Night will record their research as if they are the author about to start writing his book and collecting research about Auschwitz and German history, photos, passages (quotes) etc. 1984 - students will write Winston's diary. Lord of the Flies - write a diary (psychologist's orders) to explain what happened including quotes, diagrams, drawings, character profiles, build a model of the island etc. Animal Farm... fingers crossed no one chooses Animal Farm. If they do they'll have to think of the task and outcomes for themselves. The plan is to give them the suggestion and the desired outcomes and purpose. Then let them make the creative decisions.

students have long term projects that have potential to extend over the year so that they can have that deeper and richer learning - projects at senior level are chosen by the student's as to thematic approach. We could do more physical hands on sculptural stuff - some students do three dimensional briefs in some of their projects to try and extend their understanding and skills in a different way.
