Hennesys Lemus

Grade: 12

Period. 1

The social issue I chose was sexism. I chose it because I think it’s a very important issue that has been going on since the world first began up to this day. Although many things have changed, there are still many people who are strongly sexist. In my painting, I added a woman whose mouth is getting covered by a man’s hand and in the background there are positive and negative comments that relate to this topic. On the bottom I added a quote “you have a voice” is what’s on there. My artwork is portraying how women have been silenced, but they have a voice and they should use it. My art strategy is using a poster to portray my art. My artwork will be using line, color, value, and balance.

At the moment we are experiencing climate change and you can tell that it has slowly gotten worse. Weathers are colder and Warmer, animals are going extinct, and we could be next. Elements I will be using for this project are line, shape, space, and color.

Gianna Moreno

Grade: 11

Period 2

The social issue I chose to make work about is Climate Change. The reason why I chose this social issue is because it is something that has been widely discussed for years, yet people's harmful actions persist. However, I believe that it is never too late to change that. Our Earth, and every creature that inhabits it is beautiful. We should do the best we can to save it before irreversible damage is done. My artwork portrayed Climate Change because there is a cable wrapped around the Earth and it looks like the globe is melting. This symbolizes how we are the reason climate change is happening, because electricity is one of the many causes of global warming. The strategy I used to create my work was "Sign/ Poster". My poster will be using movement, unity, line, shape, color, and space.

Harry Lavine

12th grade

3rd Period

The social issue I made my painting on was Homelessness. The painting displays dirty arms reaching for a home as it's being crushed by a huge leg coming from the clouds. The foot is covered in rich symbols as well as a tree dropping blue and red fruits that land infront of an elephant and donkey. My painting is supposed to reference homelessness as well as political themes. The artwork essantially shows how upper-class people steal wealth and limit the help that homeless people get. I wanted to focus on color, with the red sky and the brighter colors on the "rich side", but dark gloomy colors on the hand reaching for the house. It also displays texture on the hands, house and sky and space between the different elements on each side. The principles of design are contrast, the painting is split into 2 sides, one displaying the hand being shot and dirty and the other with the leg looking wealthy. And, the painting displays movement as your eyes carry to what the hands are reaching towards and then the background objects. The theme I chose was humor vs satire. The leg is huge crushing down on the home showing how strong the oppression of homelessness is with unrealistic human cabalities. As well, an elephant and donkey are eating red and blue fruits poking fun at how each political party feeds on the rich.

Grade 12

Period 3

I chose to create an image with the social issue of misogyny and sexism in mind. I felt like the best way to combat such an issue would be to portray a powerful, successful woman that exists in the real world. While there are many fictional women that are powerful and impactful, a real life example is so much more inspiring in my opinion. Dr. Taylor Alison Swift is a singer, songwriter and performer who has achieved never-before-seen success in the music industry. She is the only artist to win 4 album of the year Grammy’s in history, and she has broken a different record every single time she has won album of the year. She is the only artist to ever occupy the entire top 14 of the billboard hot 100 and she is the only female artist to become a billionaire from music alone.

I used the technique of sign to draw attention to Taylor’s iconic lyrics from her song “The Man” off of the album “Lover.” I feel like these lyrics embody her ideals of how men have natural privileges in modern society and how she knows she would have significantly less hate placed on her if she was a male artist. The song itself calls out society’s patriarchal standards, so I feel it was a good choice to combat the issue of misogyny.

As for the actual painting, I tried to use color and value to place emphasis on Taylor’s flexing arm. I think that by making her muscles the focal point of the work, I highlighted her strength and success. The lyrics are also emphasized with dark colors, strong lines and thick shapes. I feel that these words stand out from the background to give the painting the feeling of activism that I was aiming for.

I portrayed mental health through my work by deconstructing my father’s portrait and using his face to resemble pills falling out of a bottle. Showing how much pills will ruin you as a person, showing his ripped up portrait. Mental health is important because its debilitating for many, and pills make it worse and harder to manage for some. I wanted to portray how it feels seeing someone close with mental health problems fade away because of them. I used the process and materials in the meaning strategy, reusing a previous project and turning it into something new, keeping the previous project’s relevance.

Elements of art used: Shape, space, texture, color and form

I choose to make an artwork about injustice and inequality because those two social issues are really related in many ways. For my artwork I choose to do a scale of justice because it represents injustice and inequality at the same time. For my work I use form, line, and colors. I also use some principle of design like repetition and a little bit of balance. I kinda use humor because the whole context is very silly and goofy because of the color I used for my work.

This is supposed to represent a message that racism is not right. The sign will be painted with white and red to resemble street signs to make it familiar when people look at it. My artwork portrays this issue by showing how a kid who plays with toy guns might come across a real gun and assume it’s like the toy. There are many ways to prevent this like making sure any kind of firearm is hidden and out of children reach. The strategy I used for this artwork is more like a poster than anything else. I believe it works better as a poster because it’s smaller and draws attention to how toy guns can translate to real guns. A principle of design I used is contrast. The opposite of a toy gun is a real gun.

The way my art portrayed the issue is with the contrast between the two buildings that are completely different from each other. It references how some apartments especially in California that would be sold off leaving the people living there to move or be homeless, while it gets demolished to be built into a new apartment that only a few can afford changing the neighborhood. My strategy on this art work is mostly contrast but a emphasis on how messy the building on the left is to reflect how most rundown building with have graffiti on it but also the weather on the left being different. Texture and color would be the element that comes to mind in my artwork but lines also is used as well as contrast, emphasis and some value.

Racism is the unfair treatment of people based on their race or ethnicity, and it manifests in various forms, from subtle prejudices to overt discrimination. It's crucial for us to understand and address racism because it affects individuals' lives and shapes the society we live in.One aspect of racism is stereotyping, where people make assumptions about others based on their race. These stereotypes can lead to unfair treatment and limited opportunities for individuals who are judged based on preconceived notions rather than their abilities or character. As young people, we must challenge stereotypes and recognize the uniqueness of each individual beyond their race.

The way my artwork portrays my social work is protesting against racism and how people can prevent racism from happening.

The strategy I used to create my work of art is Sign, advertisement, poster.

These are the elements and principles of design I used for my work Unity, space, line emphasis, contrast, balance, color.

What inflation means is the rise of prices due to outside variables that affect the economy, therefore increasing prices & causing inflation. In my painting the variable and type of inflation it is describing is the price increase at fast food restaurants which occurred due to wage increase at all fast food establishments in California. The method I used to get my message across was humor/satire and I mainly used acrylic paint on a canvas and used specifically the emphasis and color principals of design.

On one side of my project there is a girl sitting down with her legs curled up to her face and on the other side a man grabbing a lady’s arm. On my art project I also decided to put the hotline and where you can text for those people who are suffering from any type of violence. For my work I tried to stay within certain colors so everything would go with the flow, for example domestic violence awareness, the hot line, and text are all on red which draws the most attention. My project falls more into a sign / poster because there are many other posters around the world that portray violence and to not be afraid of standing up and finding help. One of the elements of art that are represented in my project are color and like most when I outside the body of the girl and the arm of both the man and women and when I colored in the butterfly’s and the “ Stop violence and end the silence” and the rest of the red letters / numbers. Another example is when I used like to separate the girl and the hands in the middle.

Consumerism is “the theory that individuals who consume goods and services in large quantities will be better off”, but in reality consumerism lead to more greed in our work and poverty. That is why I wanted to put different sayings on each of the hates because many people do not realize how their overconsumption affects the world. The strategies I used to create my work is using acrylic paint and exacto knives to cut out the masks from the poster boards. Another example could be the conditions in which the characters are, these conditions reflect a drastic path that leads us to understand why one of the parts is more benefited than the other. The strategy used on this painting is “meaning based on the process “ because the work shown was made in base at my feelings and I wanted to make the difference that many women’s support in their workplace clear.

Some elements of design used on this painting are: balance represented as two half’s inside the painting, contrast that we can see clearly because of the colors and emphasis in the dead brown part to evoke some negative feelings to understand better the reason of the painting.

Nayeli Ojeda

12th Grade

Period 2

The social issue that I chose to portray is the suffrage that Indigenous communities go through due to the lack of access they have towards clean water or access to water in general. Many communities in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, and Bolivia are going through this crisis because their governments are not giving them the proper supplies nor needed authority for clean water. Not only is water a supplement for these people for usage on a daily basis but it is also their drinking water. Not having clean water to drink with or bathe in is the main cause for the people to suffer diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. These diseases lead to death for the majority and because they don't have access to proper healthcare it leads to the fact that the population number within indigenous communities are dropping drastically. In the background of the painting you can see the pattern of a hand woven fabric made out of cotton which is typically used in a variety of colors, the material is used as clothing, hammocks, blankets, and cloths for daily use in Indigenous communities. At the very top of the painting you can see a very small amount of water falling.

Viktoriia Gasparyan

Grade: 11

Period: 3

I chose the social problem of war, namely the war in Ukraine. In my work, I showed 3 drawings that show the main events of the war: propaganda, money, destruction, death. I used a lot of contrast in my work, so in the first large picture I showed dead, destroyed houses on one side, and crosses standing over the graves of dead people on the other. There is a contrast in color here. You can also see the road, the web and the money, by this I showed that all the destruction and death is profitable for someone. And even during the war there are people for whom "war is like a native mother", who make money from war. Also in this picture, crosses are drawn against the background of wheat and the blue sky, which represents the flag of Ukraine. (Blue-sky, yellow-rye (wheat)). At the top of the picture, I showed the war from the side of the Russians, who chose to remain silent rather than speak out against the war. There are a lot of such people who, through the news, various Russian shows and podcasts, became hostages of propaganda and lost their opinion. In the background is a picture that hangs on the wall as an icon, and on it is their fascist leader. A child is sitting on the floor holding a gun, who has been taught Nazism, racism, and ethnocentrism from an early age. The last picture shows a child with his mother who came to visit his father/husband. The girl and her mother put flowers on the grave and are waiting for this war to end. The war will end, but how many families will remain broken and incomplete. I used a process/material strategy and imposed identities. This problem concerns not only Ukraine and Russia, but also other countries, because if Russia is not stopped, it will go further to Romania, Bulgaria, the Baltic countries and Poland.

Natalie Ortiz

Grade:12

Period: 1

The social issue I chose to do was child labor. I chose this issue because lots of people are not aware that the chocolate bar that they eat on a casual day, is what a child is working really hard to produce just to receive food. These kids get sold by their parents for money to traffickers that then sell them to cocoa bean farms where they don't get rewarded for their hard work and long hours. Instead, these children should not worry about financial situations or what meals they will eat next. They should be enjoying their childhoods, getting the proper education they need, and should be having nutritious meals with the care of their parents. I first learned about this recently in my economics class and this really struck me because it's hard breaking to hear about, especially since I would have been clueless my whole life if I didn't hear about this situation in class. In my painting, I painted a chocolate bar with an innocent smiley face and in the tiny squares of the chocolate I showed examples of child labor that occur in the production of chocolate which debunked the innocence of the face. This strategy shows identity vs imposed identity. I also used words to show that there needs to be urgency in fixing this situation as well as the color red which in psychology shows a sense of danger. The elements of art used in my project were color, line, texture, and form.

em herrera

12th grade

period 3

The social issue i chose to make an art piece about was child abuse. In my artwork it portrays my social issue with a child in the center of the kitchen crying. we can see this red substance around and on the child. we can also see that in the far back where the door is located at is this mysterious black figure lingering around and watching the child. Making the “parent” a black figure portrays a sense of fear and uncertainty onto the child whenever they are near. The strategy i used was a poster type. I manipulated color in this artwork, using dark coloring on the walls and the figure, using yellow to better illustrate the type of neglect the parents is inflicting. I also used contrast between the figure and the child, the child radiating a warm yellow… on the other hand a pitch black figure emphasizing the negative.

Name: Angel Ruiz

Grade: 12

Period: 3

The social issue i decided to work on is hate crime. The reason why I chose this topic it has been something I have learned in ethnic studies class. This influenced me to work on the social issue, hate crime. Hate crime is seen as physical abuse and violence towards minorities and certain race or groups of people. The hand represents how many people are left hurt after being physically assaulted by the skin color they are. The bloody letter show how hate crime is not only hate but abuse, violent and trauma, through the past few years we have seen more hate crimes by social media platforms. The reason for the faded letters is because hate crime is a topic that I notice has not been talked or noticed enough so major changes can happen to prevent this. In this country hate crime has been around for a very long time but has not be recognized by our governments enough to make major changes and will be a constant problem in our country and society. The elements of art i used to make this poster was shape, color, line and 3d.

Cindy Jara

Grade 12

Period 1

The social issue I chose is social anxiety. I chose is because many people ignore social anxiety because they think it’s not a big problem in the world. Social anxiety is more than shyness. It's a fear that does not go away and affects everyday activities, self confidence, relationships and work or school life. Many people occasionally worry about social situations, but someone with social anxiety feels overly worried before, during and after them. A person with social anxiety disorder feels symptoms of anxiety or fear in situations where they may be scrutinized, evaluated, or judged by others, such as speaking in public, meeting new people, dating, being on a job interview, answering a question in class, or having to talk to a cashier in a store. What actually causes social anxiety is negative experiences. Children who experience teasing, bullying, rejection, ridicule or humiliation may be more prone to social anxiety disorder. In addition, other negative events in life, such as family conflict, trauma or abuse, may be associated with this disorder. My act symbolizes that how they think that everyone is laughing at them and making fun of them. What I used for my project is a poster, line, color, value, and balance.

The rot of the earth is how I would see it. Climate change is so universally understood and displayed globally that a burning circle can commonly be seen as a work for climate change. I saw no need for anything different.

Plain paint makes for great expressive work, allowing displays of tone and intention with ease. I used texture and line work most in this painting, including a simple bold color contrast of the red against the black. The red paint only exists to add ambiguity to make the painting seem to carry greater intention. I think it does just that. However, if I were to do it again, I wouldn't add a random number for the fun of it.

I chose this issue due to the fact that it not only relates to my life in a personal matter but the fact that the world is still so discriminatory and not adapting. People who have disabilities are still human. Their disabilities don’t define them as a person. I tried to convey the spectrum of disabilities in order to educate others on how it’s not limited. From left to right I tried to show physical disabilities through a person in a wheelchair, a person who is audibly impaired with hearing aids, a person who has physical impairment with a cane, a person who has invisible disabilities/disorders (aka it might not be seen at first glance but they still have a disability) and is shown with an invisible disability badge to represent disabilities like autism, adhd, neurodivergence, etc., a person with sunglasses and a walking cane to represent visual impairment, and a service dog to bring awareness to the importance of them as they are often downplayed as cute animals and not professionally trained helpers. They’re all putting their handprint on a wall, symbolizing unity and that they are capable of making statements too as they are still humans just like everybody else. I tried specifically to focus on color and emphasis to make the characters pop out and contrast against the brick wall. I also used balance by placing them equally in distance to each other and in height. I chose to make them different colors as well to represent diversity. I used shape to convey the characters and their aids. I also painted a field of sunflowers at the bottom of the artwork due to the fact that sunflowers represent positivity, happiness, health, and hope.

I did my project on the social issue abortion. My artwork portrayed emotion a woman feels while going through abortion whether it be lack of support, depression, the feeling of being alone or that you’ve done something wrong. I used wording in my project with magazine cut outs. It looks a little like a ransom letter, but not as much. I used the paint to kind of take off a depressing layer and focus in on some of the pictures I glued onto the cardboard. I wanted to convey that a woman who gets an abortion doesn’t always feel accomplished and happy with the decision even though some groups of people try to paint it as that. Sometimes it’s just a decision one has to make in order to survive and live a life they desire.

Jose Bermudez

Grade 12

Period 1

A social issue I choose was Disability Rights because being disable has its problems but they have found new ways to better their lives and not be known as someone with a disability. In my main Art work I painted Frida kahlo,a famous female artist that was and still is popular. This Frida is when her spina bifida ( a condition that could affect both spine and leg development) was too much and resulted in her in a wheelchair. Her Condition did not affect her passion and work as you can see all her work after the conditions worsened. There are many disabilities , from paralysis, to a missing limb, or a limb losing its function, or even how the brain works. A disability doesn't mean they're out of order, it means you have to give them more time to get to you physically or mentally. Disabilities don't stop them from who they are or make you less human rather it makes you stronger. stereotypes of people with disabilities are just utter nonsense they see in the media but they don't see how they work in the real world. The materials of this pisces were mostly made from recycled materials. All of the works are real life people that lived or still live and show a great amount of work to get to where they are.The shape and lines where a very tough part of the work because they weren't normal shapes so I had balance the size of them and the people who were painted to be approximately a appropriate size. I Emphasized the parts that make them unique and different but also try to keep them look normal like everyone else.

We need to stop bullying it’s getting out of hand children, teenagers and adults are suffering cause of bullying every day parents are crying cause of their children dying or hurting themselves. The art strategy I used to create my work was through signs. The elements and principles of art included in my artwork are color, texture and emphasis. I used different materials to create emphasis and texture on the most important part of my artwork. I achieved this by using paper that we made and cardboard under as a base. I also used color to create a striking red tint on the equality sign and lighter colors elsewhere to create a more feminine look.

Stanley Li P2 - The social issue I chose was overconsumption, because we are using too many resources to keep the Earth’s climate intact, and how corporations promote consumerism. My painting depicts a city with very tall towers, all saying “CONSUME,” fashioned as logos. The city is being flooded, and it emits so much light that it overwhelms the stars in the sky. Some of my logos are vaguely based off of real logos, including Netflix, Mcdonald’s, and Amazon. I wanted to show how overconsumption is going to lead to the destruction of the Earth and, ironically, no more consumption (or human life) will be possible after that. I also wanted to show how much advertisement is shoved into our faces which I represented with the repetition of the word CONSUME in all different shapes and sizes. My strategy could probably be categorized as humor/satire or as a poster.

The colors are different people and it shows that we all are the same no matter what color we are. we are all still humans and if we all come together we can still make something beautiful. All I did too make this was drawing a heart then I filled it up with circle then erased the heart. The strategy I used was just painting random circles with different colors. This took me 6 or 7 periods to finish the small circles were really hard to paint. All I used to do this was a brush paint and some water.

Maria Meza

12

Period 3

The social issue I chose to do was mental health. In my artwork the strategy I used was humor to spread awareness of mental health. When looking at “stressed” as “desserts” backwards it can be a fun way to lighten someone's day or mood. It can also show that sometimes things can be reversed or changed to see them differently. By shifting our perspective or finding humor in things it can manage stress or difficult situations better. I chose to draw Hello Kitty because she is cute, cheerful and some people find comfort in things that bring them joy. By surrounding yourself with positive and happy images it can be helpful to forget about negative things and improve your mood. Lastly I painted desserts because desserts can also be a form of comfort and sweats can create relaxation and pleasure. In my artwork the principles of art I used were color, shape, space, value and line. Color was used all throughout my work, shape and line was used to create the desserts, space was used to help spread out wording and value was used to create different shades of pink. The principles of design used in my artwork were pattern for the font and balance to create a visually pleasing look.

My artwork portrays the issue by showing an expensive modern house. There is a black tent that represents a person living there because rent is too expensive nowadays. It is why I chose bright colors to show how good that person's life is. There is a sign that the person in the tent has to ask for money. Also there are pillows, clothes, shoes, bottles of water, umbrella, broom, chair, bicycle, and cart, that are painted with different shades of blue representing unhappiness of the person's life living in the tent. I used color and contrast. The strategy I chose was material in the meaning.

I decided to choose gang violence because I grew up in a sketchy area and although its wasn't that bad when I was little it has gotten a lot worse. I see many young kids vandalizing the school bathrooms or any random walls with gang graffiti. My art work resembles two hands shaking hands agreeing to stop their hate against each other. I used acrylic paint on a canvas one technique i used was color. I used acrylic paint and cardboard to make my project. Satire was used in my painting since it shows a guy, dressed up in a suit of the American colors vacuuming money. This is humor/satire since it's a hypothetical situation that represents how a lot of things now in The U.S. are taking more of our money than before. My project consists of the elements of color, contrast, and lines.

I decided to depict this issue by painting an abandoned food court under the water. A striking contrast is created by taking a setting we typically associate with comfort, convenience, and bustling activity, and instead making it desolate and empty. It paints a picture of a future in which we can no longer enjoy the abundance and ease of access to commodities, which is, in part, what brought about our downfall.

I used color in this piece to create unity, giving everything in the painting a blue undertone. This gave the subjects of the painting a sickly yellow-greenish hue suggesting death and illness. The muted color of the objects contrasts with the bright blue ocean background, making them stand out and feel unnatural in the setting. I also used perspective to place the tables in a 3D space which the eye moves through and follows back towards the barren horizon.

However, I believe that it is never too late to change that. Our Earth, and every creature that inhabits it is beautiful. We should do the best we can to save it before irreversible damage is done. My artwork portrayed the social issue by relating the crisis with aspects of the well known game monopoly. I used sign/advertisements/poster to convey my message by using bold basic colors that resemble signs as well as a simplistic representation that’s easier to understand and follow. I used elements of art such as color throughout the image, form on the monopoly houses, and shape. I used principles of design such as contrast by having a white background and bold colors and balance.

The reason why I chose it is because abused children is a really big thing especially for little children and can suffer from many things intense emotional damage and can develop severe social problems, and for teens such as struggles at school, drug use and juvenile delinquency. In my painting I added two hands that signals not to put a hand on your child nor anyone in general I also added a sign that says "stop child abuse". With another sign of a X to also show another reason of stopping child abuse. And lastly I also added an eye with a tear dropping down because of being scared or emotional because of causes of child abuse. The elements of Art used is paint too show the sign of stopping child abuse.

Megan Ruiz

The Shadow of the Darkness

Grade:12

Period:3

The social issue I chose was child abuse. This artwork shows the issue by having a teddy bear who has been clearly through something symbolizing a child. This "child" is in a corner of a room haunted by a shadow hand which represents the abuser. Sitting in the corner it hold a small blanket in the color blue which is the color of child abuse awareness. The strategy I chose for this is sign. One of the main elements of art used is value. Using value we see the background being different shades of gray creating a shadow dark background. Color is only used on the main subject. Space also plays a role in this piece. Principals of design in this are emphasis. We see this in the size of the hand compared to the bear. Another one is the contrast between the color bear and dark background.

Sarah Rojo

"Amanda Binded"

Grade 12

Period 3

The social issue that I chose to portray was child exploitation. In my painting, Amanda Bynes is depicted on the set of "The Amanda Show" which she starred in from 1999-2002. Amanda was first noticed by Dan Schnieder and later came to fame after he created a show for her. During her youth, Amanda was let down by the adults around her in many ways such as being overworked and exposed to things that her young self shouldn't have witnessed. Many rumors of abuse have recently resurfaced and Dan Schnieder himself was exposed as an abuser/ controller to not only her, but many other nickelodeon child stars as well. My painting shows his hand controlling her as a puppet while she puts on a show, with tears running down her face. The strategy used to create my work was identity vs. imposed identity. Elements of art integrated into my painting were color, value, shape, and line while the principles of design I mainly used were contrast, emphasis, and pattern.

In my artwork, I drew a helpless bunny subjected to testing procedures, clearly struggling and in pain. Surrounding the bunny on the table are various items used in these tests, including harsh chemicals and cosmetics, symbolizing the cruelty and indifference of those responsible. Through the use of colors and values, I aimed to capture the intense emotions of the bunny as it looks out pleadingly for help. The visual elements like color and value are to convey the emotional depth of the subject matter, a sense of empathy and awareness among viewers about the animals used in such testing practices.
