Young Adult Needs

It seems to me that as we think about what events or activities our group should be hosting or supporting we should have a general idea of what the needs of young adults in our conference are for discernment and engagement in their purpose in Christ. This is especially true when we are trying to create a space for young adults to discern and engage their purpose in Christ. I think that the three biggest areas of discernment that young adults face are: 1) What profession or calling in work young adults want to do 2) Whether or not and in what manner to start a family and 3) What young adults role in the Church is as adults. If I am correct about these being the largest areas of discernment then the activities or events that we host should revolve in some way around these three topics. Thoughts?

Small Groups

As we think about the ideas that need to be brought forth in large scale, perhaps we also should be thinking towards the needs for small groups. There seems to be a need for groups that could be formed as satellites, for a lack of a better word, that can reach out and start to form relationships with those in the young adult age group. I would guess that if planned things well, we could get churches to support such a program with in their own communities.

Family Needs and Sexuality

It also seems important to participate in some sort of event or training which focus on the need of Christian sexual ethics and family planning. This is especially true for us as the young adult council because nearly 41% of all children are born to unmarried women in the U.S.(source: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr62/nvsr62_09_tables.pdf page 6) and of those births 80% are between the ages of 19-29 years of age (source: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr48/nvs48_16.pdf page 3). So 32% of all births in the United States (as of 2015 and has gone up since then) are to single moms in the age range of "young adult." That is a staggering number! It seems to me this is a ripe field of work for us to be both aiding young single moms, and, more importantly, also teaching Christian (by Methodist standards at least) sexual ethics which would preclude sexual activity until after marriage.

Social media and young adults go hand in hand! Wether it be instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, blogs, etc using the social media platform would be one of the quickest and one of the more effective ways to reach young adults today! We could create a blog or Instagram account that acts as a model of how to live as a Christian in today’s world! So many celebrities and popular internet famous people have a negative influence on today’s young people!
