Some students may take a leader role and that could make another student feel upset because they may have wanted to take the leader position. Students have different personalities and with a younger group of students they may not have the maturity to communicate their issues.

Benefits: Using team building activities with a new group of people or students allows students to feel comfortable with eachother and in turn creates a safe learning environment. Additionally, team building activities help students learn to work together in a relaxed way before asking them to work together in an academic setting that may be less relaxed.

Drawbacks: Sometimes team building activities have very little instruction about how to play or how to complete the activity. Because of this, students may be at a loss in how to proceed which could lead to students “taking over” the group in a leadership role. This leadership can be a good thing but if there are two strong leadership personalities in the group it could cause conflict and stress for students. To mitigate the stress, the teacher can designate leaders that will eventually rotate in order to give all students opportunities to be in charge.
