The 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil spill released millions of gallons of crude oil into Prince William Sound Alaska. It was the worst environmental disaster in Alaska history, and occured in a very sensitive coastal ecosystem, magnifying damage. The spill immediately resulted in the death of oiled wildlife and significant reductions in tourism, recreational fishing and commercial fishing. Some of the marine life has still not recovered from the spill. It was a point source spill.

In the early 1980s, two water-supply systems on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina were found to be contaminated with the industrial solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). The cause was a dry cleaner that was not disposing of chemicals correctly and thus contaminated the groundwater with PCE. It was a point source contamination. The bad toxins in the water were cancer causing.

The city then allowed homes and schools to be built over the landfill and people started to feel the effects of the hazardous waste. The people living on top of the landfill were displaced. Point source contamination. Long terms effects were health and damage to the people overall.

It was the disaster that ignited an environmental revolution. On this day, June 22, in 1969, the Cuyahoga River burst into flames in Cleveland when sparks from a passing train set fire to oil-soaked debris floating on the water’s surface.Flare ups were common in this river so the fire was extinguished in about half an hour and did little damage. The cause was that ICE and PCE contamination from 2 different companies were improperly disposed. Caused some kids to get cancer. Point source.

Woburn was the scene of a high-profile water contamination crisis. During the mid to late 1970s, the local community became concerned over the high incidence of childhood leukemia and other illnesses, particularly in the Pine Street area of east Woburn. After high levels of chemical contamination were found in City of Woburn’s Wells G and H in 1979, some members of the community suspected that the unusually high incidence of leukemia, cancer, and a wide variety of other health problems were linked to the possible exposure to volatile organic chemicals in the groundwater pumped from wells G and H.

This chemical was used to wash coal. The long term effects were that 360,000 residents were left without potable water. They have been like this since.

The 1993 Milwaukee Cryptosporidiosis outbreak was a significant distribution of the Cryptosporidium protozoan in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the largest waterborne disease outbreak in documented United States history. The Howard Avenue Water Purification Plant was contaminated, and treated water showed turbidity levels well above normal. It was one of two water treatment plants for Milwaukee. The root cause of epidemic was never officially identified. 403,000 residents were contaminated by the outbreak and it resulted in 104 deaths

Coal Ash Pond Drinking Water Contamination

This occurred in North Carolina in 2015. When coal is burnt, it creates coal ash, and this contains dangerous levels of heavy metals. Duke Energy stores its coal ash in pits near plants where it still burns coal and those where it formerly burned it. At many Duke Energy sites, including Allen, the coal ash is mixed with water and stored in unlined pits—essentially ponds—where, environmentalists say, the mixture seeps into the groundwater. This cancer causing water has been making people sick for two years and nothing has been done about it.

Low oxygen in the gulf resulting from nitrogen and phosphorus. The dead zone is caused by nutrient enrichment from the Mississippi River, particularly nitrogen and phosphorous. Watersheds within the Mississippi River Basin drain much of the United States, from Montana to Pennsylvania and extending southward along the Mississippi River. Because of this, there is low animal life and more regulations regarding the water.
