In order to identify the insufficiencies in the art music canon we must first acknowledge a few things. The first thing we must understand in order to fully participate in this conversation is simple - What is canon? According to Jordan Bates, it is the, "value determining lists ingrained in our education system." In other words the standards we use to identify "good" music and masterpieces. The second thing we must understand is who shaped and essentially formed the canon we acknowledge. These things are necessary in helping us understand why the art music canon fails to be gender and race inclusive. A major problem in modern day society is being reflected in this conflict. Kira Thurman and Kristen Turner mentioned in their article "Six Easy Ways to Immediately Address Racial and Gender Diversity in Your Music History Classroom" that the art music canon is exclusively dominated by European male artists.

" 'The Western literary canon has historically been dictated by economically secure, traditionally educated, socially privileged white men,' Behrendt said. 'Plus, literacy was historically the province of the privileged and so, the uneducated or minimally educated – which included some women but most laboring-class citizens, of both sexes, as well a children – were automatically excluded.' " It's no secret that this bias stems from a generally white male dominated society. The best thing we can do in order to expand our art music canon is to take the time to recognize the works of all artists - men and women of all races and ethnicities.
