Abraham Lincoln was elected into office from March 4, 1861 - April 15, 1865. Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. In the end Lincoln led out nation through the Civil war and commanded over the union.

April 12-14, 1861

The Union had occupied Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor and then surrendered to the Confederates. The death toll was zero and the North had to surrender because they ran out of supplies. Fort Sumter was a pivotal fort in the Civil War because it was protected by the harbor and South Carolina was a pivotal place in the war. Lots of major battles were fought along the waterfront.

The Union had won the battle with more casualties in the nations capitol. The Union had put full commitment into the battle and it paid off. Where as the South only sent about 1/3 of their troops and lost the battle for the Nations capitol.

The Emancipation Proclamation was a proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln made a proclamation in the third year of the bloodiest war in all of history. The Emancipation Proclamation was the first step in putting an end to the Civil War and uniting our country once again. The Proclamation was not an end to the Civil War but a start.

Gettysburg resulted in a Union Victory but failed to negotiate and led to 3 more years of fighting. The original purpose of Gettysburg battle was to lead to a negotiation. After failing to negotiate it was a turning point in the war for the Confederates because they were not stopping until they got what they wanted; They wanted to win the war and continue to have enslaved humans. That did not end up happening but the Union still was able to walk away from the battle victorious.

The Confederate General Lee surrendered to the Union at the Appomattox courthouse in Appomattox, Virginia. This was the unofficial end of the civil war, bloodiest war in American history. The result of the American Civil War was a union victory.

States Nebraska and Kansas were becoming states and then had a extremely important vote to decide whether they were going to be free states or whether they were going to be slave states. They were very central states and would benefit both the North if they were voted to be free and the south if they voted to be slave states.

Charleston, South Carolina was a battle ground for 567 days almost exactly 1 and a half years. Finally the Union took control and evacuated all of Charleston to evacuate as it was now under Union control and not Confederate control. The Union spent lots of energy to gain control of Charleston because it was on the water and was easy access if using boats and easy to protect because there was water on one side.

Just 5 days after the Surrender of Appomattox Lincoln was assassinated why watching a play at the ford theater. John Wilks Booth went on stage then shot Lincoln from the balcony he was watching from and them made his get away on horse back. Lots of Southerners were angry they lost the war and took their anger out on Lincoln except only one person actually shot him.

Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, was wanted by the North. There was a reward out to capture him of 100,000 dollars and turn him over to the formerly known Union. Davis being the Confederacy president was disliked by many North citizens.
