He is brave,selfless, and takes risks that lead to reward. Even though he could have eaten all of the  food that he collected earlier in the book, he was generous and offered it to Rukku. Imagine if you were scavenging on the streets of India, with no food, would you be selfless and do that.An example of when he was kind, and did something to make the girls happy, was when he made Viji captain on there hunt for garbage. This just proves that he would rather have others happy instead of himself. He was brave when they hid in the dark graveyard, he took charge and made everyone else feel comfortable. He risked the chance of allowing Viji and Rukku to stay with him at the bridge,and that was a great thing in the long run. If I could, I wish that I would be able to be just like Arul as a human being. Appa was the first person to really show that this book will touch on sensitive things and talk about how it works in certain parts of the world. Appa hitting Rukku and her mother is what created all of this. Meeting Arul and Muthu, finding Kutti, and Appa really allowed Vigi to see Rukku's full potential. So even though Appa is now longer important in The Bridge Home, if Appa was not abusive and intimidating, multiple good things would have never happen. However, obviously he is important because of the times that he has been negative towards his kids and wife. That is something that the reader can relate to either from a different story or in there life. So without Appa this story would has one less thing to relate to. Therefore, if Appa would have not been included in the book it would be very different and that is how Appa is interesting.
