There are many issues represented in this book. The three prominent issues are: abuse, divorce, and depression. Though Tommy's abusive home life and Ozzie's parents' divorce are essential to the character development and background, Calvin's depression forms most of the plot in the book.

Calvin becomes associated with Ozzie in the beginning when they have to work on a physics project together. It states that Calvin used to be "popular and athletic" until something changed between his junior and senior year. "No one knew why, but loads of people had theories" (Hutchinson 45). Ozzie suspects Calvin is depressed, and later he discovers Calvin cutting himself in the bathroom. "He held a razor in his left hand...and he slowly drew the blade across his arm" (Hutchinson 80).

One of the themes represented in this book are grief. The book's primary plot focuses on Ozzie's search for Tommy, who has gone missing yet no one seems to remember who he is. It's almost like the universe erased him from history. This is simply a hunch, but it is possible the events Ozzie is currently experiencing are experiences created in his mind. It is possible that something happened between Tommy and Ozzie which caused Ozzie to enter a state of denial, conjuring up a world where the universe was shrinking and no one remembers Tommy. The universe shrinking is symbolism for Ozzie's fear of what will lie ahead in a future without the boy he loves.

I have learned many things from this book. Academically, there is much talk about quantum physics and theories about alternate realities. I have learned many of these theories, like the false vacuum and the folded realities. There is also bits of useless trivia in this book - like the production of orange juice and its controversy. This book also tells us what it's like to be dealing with certain situations. For instance, how hard it is to accept your sexuality. Or what it's like to deal with a divorce nor having a friend that struggles with depression.
