The little bird's encounter with the birch-tree in paragraph two affects its attitude toward the other trees because the birch-tree was not friendly and kind. The other trees the bird encountered were also unfriendly to the bird. The text stated, " 'No, indeed,' answered the birch-tree, drawing her fair green leaves away. 'We of the great forest have our own birds to help. I can do nothing for you.' " Another example is, " 'In the springtime!' cried the oak. 'That is a long way off. How do I know what you might do in all that time? Birds are always looking for something to eat, and you might even eat up some of my acorns.' " One other example/reason is, " The willow did not look gentle then, for she drew herself up proudly and said, 'Indeed, I do not know you, and we willows never talk to people whom we do not know. Very likely there are trees somewhere that take in strange little birds. Leave me at once.' " The bird was probably glum after that, because it was cold, and hungry, being eager to take any offer. The spruce-tree came along, and offered the bird something he wanted. The text evidence is, " 'Come right here then,' said the friendly spruce-tree, for it was her voice that had called. 'You shall live on my warmest branch all winter if you choose.' " A friendly pine-tree then offered another offer, that was hard to resist after being rejected three times. The text evidence is, " 'My branches are not very thick,' said the friendly pine-tree, 'but I am big and strong, and I can keep the cold north wind from you and the spruce.' " Another friendly tree came along, and offered the bird some food. " 'I can help too,' said the little juniper-tree. ' I can give you berries all winter long, and every bird knows that juniper berries are good.' "
