Reconciliation refers to bringing back together two parties that have been torn apart by some kind of difference. Jesus taught that people have to be reconciled to each other before they can offer suitable praise to God:

“first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:23-24)

Once forgiveness and reconciliation have taken place, a relationship is much stronger because the two parties have learning to appreciate and accept each other for what they are.

Forgiveness and reconciliation do not mean denying the difficulties of the past, but learning from the past to build a better, more peaceful future.

Reconciliation leads to the peace that Jesus prayed for at the Last Supper: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubles, and do not let them be afraid”

In all his travels to countries that have been torn apart by conflict, Pope Francis has called for reconciliation. Without reconciliation, there can be no peace, and without peace people will live unsecure lives in fear.

There has been an increased awareness of the need for reconciliation between different religions in recent times.

The Catholic church state its awareness of the respect due to other religions in Lumen Gentium

“The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the creator…in the first place amongst these are the the Muslims who, professing to hold the faith of Abraham, along with us adore the one and merciful God”

Forgiveness and Reconciliation in communities

For both forgiveness and reconciliation, understanding and empathy are important. As one example, when a teenager vandalises a property of an older person, one of the aims of the local police might be to get the teenager to meet the victim and do something to helf them.

The hope is that the teenager will begin to appreciate what harm they have done. If the victim can also learn to know the teenager as someone who has problems in their life which have caused their anger, understanding and sympathy can arise.

This is the foundation for reconciliation and a springboard for deeper trust and respect within the community.
