In western culture, red represents excitement, danger, urgency and love. Red is also a traditional colour of Christmas. Red makes me think of cokecola because their brand is red and most fast food places use red to make their customers feel hungry. In china red symbolises luck and happiness. red also makes me think of mars because the planet is red. Red is linked to violence due to blood being red. red is linked with different foods such as: cherries, strawberries, tomato, chilli etc. Red is usually linked with valentines day because passion and love is red, and makes people express their feelings. In India, red represents sensuality and purity, it is used at child birth, marriage, festivals etc. in Africa "the blood that unites all people of Black African ancestry, and shed for liberation".

For the background of my timeline I used the gradient tool to create a purple to yellow colour gradient. I used these colours because they stand out from the black text. For the ribbon at the side of the page I used the rectangle tool and then re-sized it to warp the rectangle. For the dates I decreased the opacity. I have done this because it incorporates some of the colour from the background as well. A final thing that I have done is used different fonts for each typographer, I have used each font that they have made and used it on their section of the page.

Firstly, I chose a piece of his artwork and created a pattern out of it to make a background. Then I used his face on the front cover and used a low poly affect which makes layers more pixelated. I used this on his clothes. Finally, using the rectangle tool, I created a black box with a white outline and used a fluorescent green text, because it is vibrant and elegant.

I used the opacity tool and layered the images to make one big collage of his artwork. I also used one of my own techniques on a picture of him called Low Poly.

The Red Bull logo is an interesting logo because it uses all 3 primary colours and also uses a white stroke around the outside of shapes and letters which stands out to the audience and makes it easier on the eye. The use of the primary colours is also useful because they are the colours that everybody knows when we grow up. It is also the complete opposite to their main competitors, Monster. This is because their main colour scheme is black and lime green which could infer that they target slightly older audiences compared to Red Bull who could be directed more a younger audiences.

The bp logo is an interesting logo because it uses a darker shade of green and gets slightly tinted multiple times until it reaches white, which creates a tier of varying colours. The logo is based off of an Helios symbol which featured a green and yellow sunflower which represents optimising energy in various forms.

In typography kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually appealing result. It adjusts the space between individual letterforms. Kerning will be most important for large, highly visible text like typographic logos or headlines. Although most of us don't use physical blocks of type anymore, the digital fonts we use work in a similar way.

Colour : This poster that we have analysed uses warm colours (red and yellow) which creates an exiting mood and catches the viewers eye. It uses and juxtaposing colour scheme of yellow and black, this creates a strong tone. The use of the red text is important because it separates the information from the black text.

Typography : It also uses a bold sans serif which creates a strong tone. The contrast in the typographic design is interesting because it uses different widths and each character of text from ascending to descending or vice versa. Another use of typographic contrast is the use of the vertical and horizontal and diagonal text. This is important because it fills up spaces creating a more dense poster.

Density : The use of the image in the middle is also important because it is the only thing that uses the white and is very contrasting compared to the black and the white and fills us a good amount of space. Finally the use of layering of the image is very important because it cuts into certain texts which the viewer is able to see easily.

Size : The use of the different variety of font sizes and kerning between each letters. This is effective because it makes the poster look more dense.

This is my mood board on typographic designer Paula Schers. I like her art style a lot because it uses lots of layers and different font sizes and colours.

The background pattern of the O was taken from the poster on the left. I did this by using the pen tool to select it and then duplicated and linked them together to create the pattern.

For the main image in the middle, I used the image that we analysed and implemented a red fedora and a purple monster face from other pieces of art that she has made.

Also, this mood board uses primarily warm colours which creates an exciting mood and catches the viewers eye.

A good use of typographic contrast is with the use of the diagonal text in the bottom right. This is important because it fills up spaces creating a more dense poster.

A good use of size contrast is the use of the different variety of font sizes and kerning between each letters. This is effective because it makes the poster look more dense.

Finally, the umbrella in the top right is one of my favourite because the original image utilises the bottom of the umbrella as a Y and spells out MARY POPPINS. The use of the words inside the umbrella is also effective because of the use of smaller words, shorter words but also bolder and larger words.

Typography is painting with type. It can create immense power. Each iteration of the letter gave the letter a certain distinct feeling. For example, letter E with the bottom line thickened gave it a feeling of stability — whereas a skinny and tall E gave it a feeling of instability and fragility. E with middle line equal gave it a feeling of uniformity. E with shortened middle line gave it style. This shows the power of design elements in helping elicit a certain emotion in the viewer.

This is my E-Zine front cover with inspiration from Paula Scher. First, I used the polygon tool to create a background. Afterwards, I used the gradient tool on the polygons to make them stand out from a solid colour.

Secondly, I used my pixel image of Paula Scher and put it in the middle. This is effective because it uses solid colours which makes it look bold, which means that it will stand out to the viewer.

Then, I used the text tool to put over the background which said 'DIGITAL DIARY A TYPOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION' which then was diagonally spread across the page.

Afterwards, I used the type -> create outline tool and then object -> release compound path tool, This allowed me to re-size all the letters and change them however I wanted to.

In this piece, I was in a team of three of my classmates discussing how the word did not comply with the type it had. We first began to discuss how the thickness of letters and the tight space on the black words. Furthermore, we put our thoughts and opinions on paper, explaining how the bold letters had a loud atmosphere with dull colours of red which symbolises love, hatred, happiness and mourning etc. However, the word "Country "Manor" suggests a private hotel mansion stereotypically for wealthy people, in addition, the font should be more of an institutional look using serif fonts and a more elegant appearance. However, with the font and type, it has now, it gives out the wrong idea to the audience and does not comply with its message. In addition to this, we also discussed how we felt when seeing this image.

This is my traditional mood board. On this design I have used a variety of materials, such as card and paper. I used the card as a background for the paper images. This is useful because it uses layering which makes it stand out from the background and the rest of the images.

The use of half of the earth and the letters are effective because it spreads its own message. More uses of layering have also been used with the Statue of Liberty. I have used a double layering effect so it overlaps the earth, but also falls behind it as well. The use of the yellow background behind the Statue of Liberty also represents the sun and the solar system.

One thing that I would improve next time is to use up more of the space provided. This is because there is a lot of white space on the page that could be filled. Alternatively I could use different coloured paper/card instead.

Anatomy Of Type

I have done a video regarding the anatomy of typography, where my class as a whole had a group project on making a video. Each row in our class had an assignment on choosing the different parts of the letter forms. My row had the following parts: kerning, tracking, leading, x-height, cap-height, baseline, leg and arm. my row of team in my class first started with writing all the necessary information about each part on paper, and then used Photoshop to create an informative layout providing a brief description about each letter form and an image as a visual presentation. Furthermore, we used each Photoshop image and joined them together to create the video using Premier Rush. In addition to this, we used tools such as transitions that blended in well together in order to make the video more exciting to look at. Throughout my work, I have furthered my knowledge within typography in depth by gaining awareness of each letter form. Gathering essential and detailed information that has been simplified, taking advantage of the editing software's tools and using vibrant colours and the gradient as background are the three things I believe I have done well.

This is my mood board based off THE.HAND.WRITTEN.PROJECT. I like this concept/project because you have to use your mind to figure out creative ways to lay out the images and think about what fonts, sizes and shapes to use. These designs are quite simple, however effective because they use contrasting colours which make them stand out from their background.

Active Space - The Active space in this image is effective because it creates more focus on the main graphic and also the main graphic, and also the text at the bottom of the page. The active space also creates emphasis on the shadow of the graphic. The use of shadows make the graphic look elegant. The text at the bottom of the graphic is also aided by the active space because it uses a dark colour against a light colour which makes it stand out. The also uses kerning effectively because it covers a lot of space.

Passive Space - The passive space in this image is the pastel coloured background. It is the overall compression to make the focal point of the woman to increase. With the pastel colour it make the reader's eye feel more at ease when focusing on the woman. The colours blend well in this image because they are all similar colours.

This is my final design of my 2nd page of my E-Zine. I like this because the wide range of vibrant colours stand out from the dark background.

To create the letters, I used the pen tool and created rectangles. I did this because I wanted to use a geometric typeface instead of creating the normal shape of the letters. This is because a geometric typeface allows you to be creative with designs. For the most part, I tried to keep each letter to two different shapes to make the graphic look sleek and clean.

For spaces of the page that needed some content, I created a text box and inserted placeholder text to fill the area. I mainly used white because it would be easier to read however, in this instance it shouldn't matter.

One thing that I could do to improve the design would be to refine the letters to make them more sleek.

You also need to lock the background which can be found in Object > Lock > Selection, or use command + 2.

Secondly, you need to insert a word of your choice and adjust the typeface and kerning etc. If this doesn't show up you have to go to Window > Type > Character. Then you have to fill the text with the same colour as the background using the colour picker tool.

Then, select your type using the selection tool and click Effect->Extrude & Bevel and adjust the options as shown below.

Now you have to go to Object > Expand Appearance and using the direct selection tool, select the top of each letter. Then go to Edit > Cut, Edit > Paste in Front and then Object > Compound Path > Make.

After that, use the selection tool to select all the layers and right click and click Clipping Mask > Mask and then the design should be finished.

In the future, I will use this design process because it is very effective.

Create an A4 document within Adobe Illustrator.

Using the rectangle tool, create a background and fill with a colour of your choice.

Once you are happy, lock the background by heading to Object > Lock OR Command + 2 (shortcut).

Use the type tool to write the content of your poster.

You now need to expand your type into shapes. To do this, head to Object > Expand > Fill.

Once you have done this, ungroup your letters by selecting Object > Ungroup. Once you have ungrouped your letters, you can begin to rearrange them.

We are now going to use the 3D rotate tool to experiment with isometric perspectives. To do this head to Effect > 3D Rotate. You should then use the drop down options within '

Position' and select 'Isometric Top'. Click OK and repeat this

process for all the letters within one of your words.

For the second word, experiment with a different isometric

perspective. In this example, we will use 'Isometric Right'.

Hover back over until you highlight the box/rectangle path

around the letter. Click and delete the box/rectangle path.

You now need to prepare each letter ready to use the blend tool.

To do this, you need to complete the following steps:
Select one of your letters.

Go to Object > Expand Appearance.

Right Click > Ungroup

Right Click > Release Clipping Mask.

Click off your letter.

You should now repeat this process for all the letters within the design. Once you have completed this, you will need to

duplicate (alt & drag) the letters within one of your words and place ready to blend.

To blend, select a letter and its duplicate.

Head to Object > Blend > Make.

In your toolbox, you will have the blend tool. Select this to

alter the number of steps within your blend. To do this, you will see a 'Specified Step' option within the spacing dropdown. Select this and amend the number of steps. For this example we used 60.

You now need to amend the stoke of the blend to be able to see all the steps. The stroke is located at the bottom of your tool box and you should make this the same colour as your background. Finally, you need to arrange the top letter

and bring it to the top so it is visible.

To do this,

Double Click the Letter >

Right Click > Arrange> Bring to Front.

Apply this to all the other letters within your design. You can then experiment with the placement of each letter using the selection tool.

You can also use the direct select tool to work with the anchor points and manipulate the length, angle and direction.

In the future I will use this technique because it allows you to create various 3D designs that can be exploited in different ways to create elegant designs.

I think this because it adds some more creativity to the design.

Finally the use of the place holder text is also important because it helps fill small gaps in-between words/patterns.

The use of contrasting colours against each other makes the images stand out from the solid colours.

I made one, duplicated it and then changed the hue/saturation.

For the text, I entered them together using rulers on photoshop and then duplicated it twice and put them on both sides to creates a drop shadow effect.

This is my mood board on artist Michael Bierut. Personally, I don't particularly like his art style. This is because it uses the same design and colours which I don't personally like. One thing I do like about his artwork is his layout on the page. All shapes and/or letters are always the same distance apart from each other or the borders of the page.

For the background I used the rectangle tool and filled it with black to create a pitch black background. After that, I used the paint brush tool and selected a custom made brush which allowed me to create a splat type effect and used various colours. I then used the same tool again, but instead I changed it to white and put them around the edges of the border leaving a small gap in between.

Finally, for the text I created and bar wave in the centre of the page and moved the letters which creates a wave effect.

One thing that I would change next time is the amount of bars and/or what word that I could choose to make it look sleeker
