Jenny and Shaun became friends this year. They often hang out at recess or lunch. They like the same kind of music and both have similar senses of humor. They both have lots of other friends and do things with them together and separately. Jenny occasionally gets annoyed when Shaun has plans with other people and she doesn’t. Shaun sometimes feels the same way when the situation is reversed.

Santiago and Micaela have been friends since third grade. They first became friends because they both love the same TV show. They sometimes hang out together watching it or just playing. Lately Santiago has been hanging out with some other kids. Micaela doesn’t like them and is thinking about telling Santiago he can’t be friends with her if he keeps hanging around those other kids.

At school they are spending less time together because Maurice has become friends with another group of kids who seem to dislike Angie. When Deena got it, Juliet didn’t talk to her for a week. They are also often kind to each other. Last week when Juliet got a lower score on their math test, Deena said, “That’s OK—you can bring it up on the next one. I can help you study if you want.”

They have been friends since childhood so they have a close bond which is why they can keep this bond in a way.

What detracts from the friendship?

Micaela doesn't like the friends that Santiago is hanging out with so she tells him to let go of his other friends if he wants to stay friends with her.

How could the people elevate their friendship?

By respecting personal lives and knowing to separate friendships so they can have there personal friendships and then other friendships on the side.
